It is in the news today that some do - gooders think it would be a good idea to tax fizzy drinks with sugar in them. I think this is bang out of order. What do YOU think?

Maybe it is an attempt to stop kids getting whizzed out of their heads on caffeine drinks.

Not fair on those of us who want a night at the pub without drinking. Put a tax on it at shops but not pubs.

Plus if they want to tackle childhood obesity do things like close down sweet shops outside school. I drive past a secondary school every morning and about 6 months ago a disused shop opened as a sweet shop and it is heaving before school! How many parents realise this is what the kids are spending their pocket money on or even worse their lunch money and they then skip lunch!

I wouldn't be against a tax on fizzy drinks if the money actually went to fighting obesity rather than operating on or treating it after its happened but i am against it being used to get more kids on substandard school dinners or providing easy ways out through surgery for more people(not that bariatric surgery always works long term but thats the way its promoted).

Would it effect pub prices?
The proposed alcohol tax wouldn't because pubs already sell above the limit.
Soft drinks are just as expensive, if not moreso, than some alcoholic drinks in pubs.

I agree with a fizzy drinks tax, I'd happily pay it.

Pretend that something is "very very bad" for people, then add an extra tax on it.
If only the Mafia had thought of these things, they wouldn't have bothered with prostitution, gambling and racketeering

New York banned soft drinks being sold in venue above a certain size... fine worked out as worse than being caught in possession of cannabis!!

I don't think the bad is such a bad idea as I'm trying to lose weight and soft drinks a deadly

Perhaps they should tax drinks with caffeine in then.

Not if you drink water but I can only drink spring water and that has VAT on it so that is obviously considered bad for you too.

Why can't you drink filtered tap water?

I'm not sure why people are being defensive on this.

We need to raise money and surely it is better to pay tax on a drink that isn't good for you, than on wages or healthy foods and drinks?

As tobacco tax income decreases it would be a good idea to put it on something else.

Not even the cat likes it. The water is awful here but travel 3 miles and it becomes nice.

Because it's just a random thing to tax isn't it? There is more sugar in an Innocent Smoothie than a can of coke, wonder if they'll tax that as well?

Tax on most goods is random.

It is better they tax something we don't have to buy and that in general is bad for us, than something we do have to buy and is relatively healthy for us.

The 'but they don't tax so and so' argument is weak.

I drink a lot of soft drinks so this will affect me, but I'm willing to do it rather than have other things taxed more.

I hope so, I don't like to pay more than £2 for a 2lt bottle.

Well it will certainly not make me drink less. I survive on soft drinks as a non tea/coffee/alcohol drinker.
