Markets
I was wondering where markets buy the fruit & veg from? It's because we are always being told to buy from our local markets but if the produce comes from the same place as supermarkets rather than local suppliers what's the point?

Very difficult to get fruit and veg here in District 12. Mostly root veg and stuff foraged.

I bought 2 apples in Morrisons the other day- imported from Germany. A "farmers market" comes to our area once or twice per month, sometimes pay it a visit, usually its cheeses, butcher meat, cakes etc though.

Not so much the farmers markets, I was wondering more about the general town markets.

Walthamstow market, Romford Market. They even have the traditional vendors shouting "pound a bowl!" at customers.

I'd like to think that markets are great value for money compared to the big supermarkets.
But I was told that most markets, and cheaper supermarkets, sell fruit and veg that's not as fresh. It was already relatively old when it went in the freezers and by the time you buy it it's likely to go off much quicker than the fruit and veg from the big supermarkets. I don't know if that's true, but the guy who told me is usually a dependable source of information on food and drink. |

most citys have a fruit and veg market who supply the local greengrocers with much better produce than you can buy in supermarkets which has travelled half way round to world.

Many markets in towns sell local produce from the local area, others don't - by diverting just £5 from spending in a supermarket to spending in a local shop or market stall, you can add as much as £19mn (depending on popn of town) to the local economy. Google: Totally Locally

I'd never buy fruit and veg from my local market. Its a dump and most of the people, stallholder and customer alike look diseased.

Although we have a good market here in Swansea, I long to visit Borough Market in London!
![]() We have some superb 'Pazars' in Turkey when we're living there - they don't know how lucky they are to have such fine produce and so cheap! As a veggie I have about 20 a day! ![]() However, I do miss not being able to just go and buy gram flour as an example, or something out of season that I need for a recipe - then there's the lack of herbs I'm used to. So it's roundabouts & swings as they say. |
