Frankly, it would be very easy to resurrect both Mordred and Morgana and make a series about them after the events of S5. The entire story could develop from there. I don't want to say anymore because I found this interview:

Q: Where do Mordred's loyalties lie?

A: He's torn. He's caught in the middle of Arthur and Morgana. They are two people pulling in opposite directions. And he's the rope in between them. He's like the child of divorced parents.

Which is very similar to thoughts I had about the Mordred character and wrote on in this thread... it's coincidences like those that make me believe at times that some people from MERLIN actually tune in to this thread...

Naw... can't be.

For me, a good story line would be that Mordred would suffer a fate like Tantalus or Merlin unless for failing to fulfill his destiny. Before going to off Arthur, as we saw, Morgana buries Mordred but after she departs, he and Elyan are resurrected by the Callieach. It's all part of a master plan by the Triple Goddess to preserve the Old Religion and to meld that with the New Ways.

The Callieach tells them that the Goddess has blessed them with the chance to return the rightful one and fulfill the destiny written since the dawn of time. They set off a questing but soon discover they're on opposite sides of whom the rightful one is that needs to be restored. Through in the obligatory puzzles and mazes, damsels in distress, and recruitment of knights like Gwaine (who's not dead) and Percival and it's a series of 13 episodes easily.

But would Alex want to reprise Mordred? Immediately after MERLIN ended he said:

Topman Generation: Now you played Mordred in the BBC1 fantasy drama Merlin that finished during the Christmas holidays. Now the series has finished, would you ever rock the sandals and swords look again?
Alex: I dunno really. When you’re doing a show like that the novelty soon wears off. The horse riding and sword fighting was great but the chainmail was very heavy to wear and not very comfortable. If the right role ever came up I’d do it again but I don’t think I’ll be dressing up as Mordred for Halloween this year.

“Neither! The army costume was comfy but itchy, very itchy, a very starch filled costume. It couldn’t have been more real and you were never thinking ‘I could wear this forever’.

“The chain mail is an absolute curse of a costume, when you have it on it weighs a ton, when its hot outside you bake, when its cold you freeze. There is no happy medium whatsoever. To be honest with you I’m just looking forward to a drama where I just get to wear t-shirt and jeans!”

by Moleymo - The effect was awful, it left much of the audience feeling cheated not to be able to see merlin achieve his goals and stand with Arthur to reunite Albion

I'm not talking about the reuniting of Albion or the "Golden Age" fiasco, I'm on about Merlin's magic being revealed. They could have done both of the former still without needing to do the later which is why I can understand and agree with what Alex was saying.
Arthur could have united the various leaders and formed Albion while Merlin's magic was still a secret, he could have created treaties with the Druids while Merlin's magic was still a secret, he could have declared magic no longer illegal and that the ways of the Old Religion could be once again followed and Merlin's magic could still have been a secret.

The important point that was being made was that people's impressions of Merlin as the outwardly all powerful sorcerer come from prior knowledge of the legends, something which I've also said before.
Going on show canon, Merlin is a powerful sorcerer but his is a hidden magic and, even if Arthur did all of the above, Merlin would still have to face the threat/thought of what his reaction would be to finding out his "best mate" had been hiding such a big thing through all the time he'd known him.

Considering how much they hated the chainmail and how uncomfortable it was its a bit sadistic they made them wear it all the time when it was completely unnecessary

How would merlin stand as equal to Arthur without a magic reveal? Their friendship was hindered by the lie, it was a massive obstacle
