Does anyone else think The Jacksons IN BROOKSIDE were too short lived? They were only part of the show, for a year and a half.
I think they should of been kept longer, in the show, or even at one point brought back to the close.
Anna Keaveney who played Marie Jackson, was fantastic in the role. Marie was a proper battleaxe, proper scouse fishwife, one of the best characters in the shows history.
Sadly Anna died a few years back of lung career. R.I.P
One of the best scenes in Brookside's history is the big arguement/catfight with Marie Jackson and Sheila Grant.
Brilliantly acted, and written.

.
That was a brilliant scene, loved the feuding between the Grants & Jacksons.
Sad to hear the actress who played Marie is no longer with us.

PS. George Jackson was innocent!

Some friends of my brother wrote to 'Marie Jackson' giving their opinion on the private school for the lads issue. 'Marie' wrote back a reply in character. They cherished that letter.

Me too! Marie Jackson was a bloody annoying character but the actress who played her did a fantastic job.

That's a brilliant story. You should get your friends to scan the letter and put it up online. It would be a lovely tribute to Anna Keaveney.

I've got an Anna Keaveney story if anyone wants to hear it? I'll warn you in advance that it's not really that interesting.

The Jacksons were good, strong characters, who could have been given a bigger bite of the cherry at Brookside.

But they were replaced by the Corkhills - who were one of the best families in any soap - ever, and in one form or another lingered on until the death of Brookside in 2003.

Okay, but you'll probably wonder why you bothered asking

About 25 years ago my friend shared a flat with some actors who were in a play with Anna. I went to see the play and afterwards we all went for a meal.

Anna was very vocal and a bit irritating but seemed harmless enough. She insisted we go to a specific Italian restaurant and then she ordered spaghetti carbonara. Before the meal came she went on and on about how brilliant she made spaghetti carbonara and she only ordered it in restaurants to prove that hers was better. It duly arrived, she poked around it and took a tiny forkful and then made a big, am-dram pantomime deal of going "Euurrghh, that's AWFUL, it's NOTHING like as good as mine". She spent the rest of the meal bitching and moaning about being hungry and being a general pain in the backside.

Anyway, apparently, she did this EVERY time they went out...ordered the carbonara and put in the same ridiculous performance. It just seemed really weird and pointless.

I feel awful talking ill of the poor woman now that she's dead but she could be quite trying. That said, she was a terrific actress and could be really funny and good company I'm told. I only ever met her that once.

Bless her. Sounds just like Marie.

Reminds me of the old 60s Corrie catfights involving the likes of Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples and Annie Walker.

That was brilliant. Brookside had some fantastic cat fights in its day.

I sometimes think I look back with rose-coloured specs at how good Brookside was, but it really was fantastic in the 80's. Still the greatest UK soap ever.

Brookside was brilliant back then, so innovative and thought provoking.
