You should listen to Hole, it's even better.

What, I allways thought Nirvana was for the kids and Hole for the people with taste.

Indeed, I love the majority of Hole's 90s output.

Not that Nervermind isn't great... I guess it just has all the hits I've heard too many times over the years.

I have Nirvana, The Singles, although misses so many great tracks. I don't know why people started mentioning Courtney Loves band Hole on this thread, but for my tuppence worth, have Pretty on The Inside, and Celebrity Skin albums.

^^ I agree with this! I do like 'Nevermind' but its so overrated and overplayed imo. It also seems to be the only Nirvana album people can name with the tracks from it being the only ones that people can name too.

IMO the ranking of Nirvana albums from best to worse is:
1) 'In Utero'
2) 'Bleach'
3) 'Nevermind'

I do really like 'Something In The Way' off of 'Nevermind' though. That's a brilliant song.

That's all very well. But you've not answered the traditional DS number one question... are they as good as One Direction?

Is this not the case with most non pop bands and artists? The album that get's them big may have catchy tracks but lacks the substance and qaulity of the majority of their less mainstream material?

It's certainly the case with a lot of artists, though I'm not sure I'd stretch to 'most'. It's not an argument you often see levelled at 'Nevermind' though - it has received endless praise from all kinds of 'serious' critics and music fans, not just people who want something catchy - and it is certainly more acclaimed than 'Bleach', at any rate.

Just to add my two cents to the discussion, 'In Utero' is easily my favourite Nirvana album, but 'Nevermind' is a close second. Also, for their big 'mainstream' album, it's funny how a lot of 'Nevermind' isn't actually that different from 'Bleach', aside from the cleaner production.

Courtney Love usually pops up at some point if there's a discussion about Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. While we're on that topic though, I'll say that 'Live Through This' is easily as good as, if not better than 'Nevermind' in my opinion, and 'Celebrity Skin' is great too. 'Pretty on the Inside' and even 'Nobody's Daughter' have their moments too.

Nevermind is a great album that kickstarted a whole genre. Sure you can trace the origins of the Seattle sound back to Green River, The Melvins, The U-Men and The Fastbacks - but it was Nevermind that broke grunge into the mainstream.
I happen to think Nirvana were abit of a one trick pony (hellva good trick mind) - I think they only really had one sound, the main difference between their albums is the production - Low-Fi (Blench) - Pop (Nevermind) and Raw (In Utero). It's my personal view that even if Kurt hadn't taken his life, the band had reached it's natural conclusion and would have ended.

I think we would have seen them go quieter and more melodic, at least for the record that followed In Utero. It's gutting that we never found out what Kurt would go on to do. He was instinctively more talented than, I think, a lot of people realised.

Agreed, but I don't think Nirvana would have continued. I think he'd said all he had to say in that format. I reckon you're right with the quieter more melodic direction - perhaps he'd have made a solo acoustic album???

He only wanted 3 albums with nirvana and that was it, he was intending to do solo projects and an album with r.e.m. Front man michael stripe.

I wish kurt was still making music but god must have needed him more
