They are not a great device, cheap enough to buy but not as good as a conventional oven IMHO.
Granted a bog standard Halogen oven is not best at cooking cakes, mainly because the heat is uncovered directly above and there are no seals as such. but if you use a extension ring and then put some foil on top of the cake part way though cooking to stop the top burning it is doable. The crisp and bake is a different machine, the halogen light is more or less covered, so no direct heat from light. it also got a rubber seal, which helps to keep the heat in. As i said i cooked sponges in it and worked first time. but then I also cooked sponges in a microwave, which works ok, but they don't brown. but then i know what I am doing

Maybe you don't know how to use them. for one or two people they are great devices, no point in warming up a large oven that takes loads of energy when a small halogen oven will do the job.

These little ovens are OK for a single person who's not cooking more than very basic food.I kitted my two children out with them when they left home for university, both are also very good cooks and neither of them bought the ovens home. I much prefer my gas ovens or the Aga. Although if I buy another campervan I might get a Halogen oven so I can cook outside and not have food smells lingering about. |

Useful for that i suppose, but when we used to go camping years ago, we just used a small camp cooker with two burners and a grill. these days people seems to have all the mod cons, ovens, microwaves, TV. i loved camping and the simple life was great. sometimes i wish i could do it permanently.
