I would say it would be a given that they would as least bid for such. As that would be a valuable high profile acquisition to add to BT Sport's portfolio.

Are the rights up for renewal next year?

BT won't have to outbid Sky to win CL rights.

(As I'm sure everyone on here knows!) ITV currently has Tue 1st picks.

Before anyone says "FTA rights are separate" note that all CL rights in France are now Pay (except the Final).

If Sky and BT both massively outbid ITV it's perfectly possible that Sky and BT both end up with one 1st pick night.

I'm sure UEFA would prefer to retain ITV and if the bid difference is small they may well stick with ITV even if ITV bids less. But if the differential is massive they may well feel forced to go with Sky and BT.

They may go after the tennis rights too from other channels.

Good find.

Yes, the key sentence in Marketing Magazine "A well-placed source told Marketing: "BT will announce its commercial proposition in the week-ending 6 May and this will soon be followed by the marketing campaign."

But as 6 May is a Monday I think they mean w/c 6 May.

BT's Q4 results are due on Friday 10 May so we would normally expect more information just before before, or on, that date.

Looks like a rolling promotional video will appear on the Sky EPG on channels 445 and 447 from Friday 3rd May at 6am.

Maybe, finally, we may get to find out their commentary line up's aswell.
Really all we know at the moment is that Jake Humphrey is lead presenter, there must be a few more names on the hosting front aswell considering they do have a large amount of football.
I can see him hosting FA Cup aswell as prem but what about Scottish football?
Maybe as far as commentators go they are waiting for the current season to end as they may still be employed by other channels.

They already have the WTA tour, and possibly some small ATP tournaments inherited from ESPN (although these may only have been on ESPN in the first place due to its relationship with IMG).

...And then there's the US Open.

Hmmm... PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale, Golden Boot holder and probable winner again RVP (he's 6 clear of everyone else who's still in the race), nice bit of business there by BT!

Given what we know that BT have bought, and how much they are inheriting from ESPN, they are going to make a lot of people unhappy that what they used to get live, will now only be available either on delay, or live through some sort of "player" stream option.

Mail article states that Sunset+Vine's production contract for BT's Premier League coverage has penalty clauses in it , including " £250,000 fine if a goal is scored without being screened live".

Or how much for switching to an advert during a Steven Gerrard goal?

Why will it no longer be live?

The amount of content is getting to the stage where it must be doubtful whether all "main" content can fit on two channels.

I'm not talking about multiple German / Italian / French etc league games which will presumably only be available online but main content - so in the case of European leagues that means the "main" game.

On a typical weekend we are looking at something roughly like:

BT Sport 1:
Fri 7.30pm - Aviva game 1
Sat 12pm - PL
Sat 3pm - Aviva game 2
Sat 5.30pm onwards - European leagues
Sun 12pm - SPL
Sun 3pm - Aviva game 3
Sun 5.30pm onwards - European leagues

So football and Aviva are going to completely fill up BT Sport 1.

That leaves an awful lot to go on BT Sport 2 - more European leagues, WTA tennis, MotoGP, Top 14 rugby.

It's looking pretty hard to see how everything is going to fit into two channels with all "main" events shown live.

ie It's easy to imagine stuff like WTA tennis (which on a weekend will be semis + final) ending up being shown as recorded highlights - which won't please tennis fans who have had most stuff live in the past.

Thanks for clarifying. It might diffuse the brand a bit, but perhaps some content could be shown live on ESPN instead? Could it be the home of WTA?

Really?

Think bigger. Like what the BBC offer atm, but with knobs on. An example would be watching Final Score on a Saturday, with the red button in the corner saying 'Watch Live Snooker'.

Yes - that's obviously an option.

Another is that stuff could just be online only.

But for stuff which isn't going to get that great an audience anyway the concern will be that they won't bother and it'll just end up as highlights.

Of all BT's current content the sport I would be most worried about is tennis - because it's low priority vs football and rugby (and probably also below MotoGP) and the fact it is not time specific (ie match duration unknown) makes it awkward to schedule when space is limited.

I do realise that actually.

The issues are two fold:

- will they bother with lower profile stuff
- will it be available on all platforms

It's important to keep things in perspective. The Aviva is getting 30,000 to 40,000 on ESPN and that's with ESPN in 1.8m VM homes.

What do you think low profile content on BT non main channel is going to get?

The concern will then be that a lot of stuff won't get shown live even outside main channels - because if audiences are so tiny they can't be measured they won't bother with it - it'll be easier just to do highlights or not show some stuff at all.

2 - What do you think low profile content on BT non main channel is going to get?

Thats a very interesting question. And I note you keep comparing BT Sport's future numbers with those of ESPN. But BT is not any of the previous incumbents before it. Plus it will have many more ways and means of distributing its new channels far and wide. IPTV, DTT, the red button, BT Vision and, far more importantly, YouView. So, for the reasons given above, the numbers they may gain actually cannot be estimated.

I appreciate that but I think it's a reasonable comparison to make, at least in the early days.

The average person is interested in availability, content and price.

ESPN is available to just about everyone in the country through DTT (as well as through Sky / VM). So if anyone wants it, availability is not a problem - it's available.

I understand that BT will have other delivery platforms which will encourage uptake but availability isn't a constraint for ESPN.

Of course BT may make it available "free" to BT Vision subscribers (or nearly "free" or whatever) but initially that's still only approx 800,000 subs, some of whom are getting ESPN at the moment.

If they lose the 1.8m VM "automatic" homes then BT Sport is inevitably going to be in far, far fewer homes than ESPN is today, at least initially. The BT Vision subscriber base would have to roughly treble just to get back to the number of homes currently with ESPN (assuming all BT Vision homes get BT Sport) - and that also assumes no reduction in homes on Sky platform which may occur without Sky as retailer.

In terms of content of course there will be significant differences between BT Sport and ESPN but the overall content offer isn't wildly different. I suspect most members of the public (who don't follow these matters in intricate detail unlike posters on here) won't perceive a massive difference.

Anyway, my previous post wasn't actually about overall BT Sport subscriber numbers but about how many viewers specific BT Sport content would get if it isn't on "main" channels.

If they fill all 3 HD stations

I am hoping/dreaming that they can put added content

behind the Red Button
in HD
& Recordable

I doubt all of this will happen but hey not as if its 2013 and the technology is there to do it.... Oh wait it is and there is.....
