Is it possible to keep my old number when getting a new phone on a different network?

If so - how?

Yes. Call your existing provider and ask for a PAC (port authorisation code). When you receive it, call up the company you want to move to (or go to a store) place your order for a new contract and they'll port your number across. Usually takes a couple of days.

I was going to buy the phone on line, can I do that and then move the number?

Yes the number has nothing to do with the phone it's to do with the network

You'll get a new sim with a different number at first. Give them the PAC and they'll swap numbers.
