Shazzam - any good?
This has been around for a long time, but I've only recently been seeing adverts for it. If you don't know, it's a mobile phone service that purports to be able to name that tune if you hold your mobile to a music source and play a max. of 30 secs of the track down your phone. Then, once it knows, it texts you the title and artist.
Has anyone found this to actually work? I have visions of hodling up my mobile and playing the track and getting a text back saying 'Sorry, I couldn't quite hear it. Please try again', and so on for a few attempts, then getting a final one that says 'Sorry, unable to name this one. Please try again with a different track'. |

I use it LOADS - it's never been wrong.
Even on really obscure stuff, like white label tracks played on Radio 1's Essential Selection. There's been a few it hasn't been able to 'tag' - but at least it doesn't charge you. |

It's usually quite accurate, it'll only tell you what the song is if it's sure.
It's so far only failed me once, when I tried to tag the music in the background of one of Neil Buchanan's Big Art Attacks ( ).

Shazam is the best. NEVER ever failed me yet.
(Also, if you have less than 50p credit on your phone you can still use it with out paying!!) - You wont recieve a text back but you can look it up on the website! )

It's had a 50% success rate with me, but you don't get charged for failed attempts! Mind you, the "failures" have usually been on movie trailers, which have a lot of extraneous dialogue/sound effects on them.

It's very good - the only requirement is that the music comes from a digital source - it won't be able to find old tracks on 1920s vinyl or anything like that! I found loads of tracks with it when it was first out (year(s) ago), although now I'm on virgin mobile so I can't use it anymore
