Nob question.

Ignoring functionality .... are Blu Ray players just like HDMI cables ie it doesn't matter what you spend the picture will be the same because it's digital?

I just want a player ... no nobs and whistles .... just picture quality.

Pretty much, I think. At least up to a certain price level. You might get a slightly better picture for 4 times the price of a budget player, but it will be marginal at best. However at budget prices, I would say reliability becomes more of an issue than performance, and that the quality of your TV is far more important than the quality of your Blu-ray player.

I am not going to be buying many -if any more - discs .... I've just bought my wife the 2012 London Olympic set and want to buy something for her to watch it on. I have a great TV ....

You are more likely to get a difference between cheap and expensive players when playing DVDs because the expensive one may have a better upscaler.
