If you have your contacts synced for you Google Account then they are automatically backed up any way and get pulled down to any device you put your account on.

However in general most people do updates over the air. These preserve you data so there is nothing to worry about. Also if you update via a manufactureser PC programme – e.g. Samsung’s Kies – then that should also have the option to back up your data as well. I will say though a major update will quite often run better if you do a factory reset.

My other half has the Galaxy S2, just looking on the Official Samsung Site at the manual, it now lists as User Manual (Jelly Bean) so I'm assuming that the update for these phones is now imminent, I know people have been waiting for this for a while, so just posting my observation

Make sure you set up Google Now. It is IMHO the best software feature on phones in years.

There are a few reasons I suppose. Firstly Samsung have a lot of phones to update. Secondly they heavily modify Android and they have to be sure it works properly. And lastly these manufacturers want us to buy a new phone so they have no real incentive to rush the updates out. It can be very frustrating but a lot of people probably have no idea what version of Android they are on let alone what to expect from an update.

That's a crock.
No manufacturer would be dumb enough to think that a) people would buy a new handset just because their existing one didn't get a firmware update and b) that even if customers would, that they'd buy from the same brand again.

Deliberately delaying or withholding software updates would only lose a company customers.

Apple. Apple have a myth about getting updates quickly to all the devices but they deliberately hold back features from software updates to encourage you to get the latest phone. When iOS 5 was released the only way to get Siri was to get the 4S as the perfectly capable 4 was denied that functionality. And this is not an isolated example. It certainly does not harm Apple.

I am not sure every company is as rabidly commercial in the updating scene as Apple but what incentive is there to a company to update a phone? And why do we expect free updates? You buy your device and the company gets your money, they don’t make any more from pushing out a Android 4.2, in fact it costs them to do it. They should be obliged to offer bug fixes and security patches as with Samsung and the exploit on the Exynos series 4 but when you buy a new phone be happy with it how it is – if it gets better then great. I’ll say it again; most people don’t know and don’t care what version of Android they have on their phone. We do on here but we are weird, normal people don’t discuss things like this. I know that I am particularly weird because I am only happy if I am running and testing the latest nightly build of CM 10.1 on my Galaxy Nexus.

Only if you live in the US and furthermore, I've found it to be a big battery drain.

That's when the roll out is meant to start. We'll be lucky to see it before June/July

Disagree on both. Only thing missing in the UK is package tracking.

You can disagree on usefulness but it is a given fact that it will drain more power it is constantly trying to draw your location. Unless you believe that you'll get something for nothing...

I would like to know how true this is. Someone said they other day that they used Siri on a jail broken 4 and it has a significant effect on performance. Have you tried it?

I've not found it to be a big battery drain, which is what I disagreed with; I've not even found it to be a noticeable battery drain. I'm not suggesting that it requires zero power

Siri used to be available as a standalone app until it was made part of the OS. It ran fine on the 4, so I hear.
