Payg
I currently have PAYG from virgin mobile, they are on the brink of being dumped by me. I pay less than £1 per year as I don't make hardly any calls and zero texts and data, the phone is mainly for incoming calls and emergencies.
What PAYG can I move to that will not charge me unless I make a call? I'm trying to also upgrade my phone to a smart phone either Nokia Lumia 620 or 820 that I'll be using mainly via wifi and skype to skype calls. I get confused with all these monthly top ups ![]() TIA |

You make hardly any calls, send no texts and don't use data yet you want a smart phone? Logic fail big time. If all you're using the phone for is incoming calls and emergencies get a £10 phone and put £5 on once a year and make one chargeable call or text once every 6 months.
Why waste money on something you won't benefit from?

I will have access to wifi and get free wifi when out and about! So I guess a smartphone can be used for this purpose?

I only get charged when I make a call, I have a DD set up and that covers me.
The last bill I had to pay was last August. |

Smartphones use data even when sleeping, so you will probably get charged for data use.

But does it not use wifi rather than the mobile network? I thought you could turn of the mobile network so that your data comes from your broadband etc...

You could try Ovivo Mobile with their free minutes, text and data but the down side for you is that the sim cost £15 to buy so that’s the equivalent of 15 years on Virgin with your current usage.

If you're only going to use the phone on wifi and for Skype on wifi, why not buy an iPod touch instead? Then you can keep your existing super cheap phone arrangement, and the iPod touch can do the other things over wifi.

Just bear in mind you need to make a chargeable call / text or top up at least once every six months otherwise o2 cut off your sim. Its like this with all major networks now.
This was one thing I did not have to do with VM as the keep the SIMs active with no transactions, but it's a small price to pay 15p per phone

I think with virgin it is at least one chargeable event once every 12 months so you probably would have done that anyway.

Hang on, surely there are sim only plans with no included data aren't there?
As long as you are with a network or brand that doesn't let you go over your data allowance (like T-Mobile, EE or Three for example), the handset wouldn't be able to download anything anyway. Or to put it another way, even if the sim came with some included data, once you'd used it up you would have to actually buy some more to incur any costs. |

Why waste money on something you won't benefit from? ![]() a £10 phone, wont give me a good reason to charge it up every week if I'm not making calls, so I probably end up not using it at all. What a waste of £10 . |
