Can't believe there isn't a thread on the latest hot topic.

Are we the only nation on earth that is so horrified that Mr Ed has been ground up and put into ready meals? They're screaming "DON'T EAT IT!".

Most other countries would just go "Meh.." and continue selling it. Let's face it, it's not gonna kill you is it? In a lot of countries it is eaten as a standard meat.

I couldn't give a monkeys if it said "Findus Horsemeat Lasagne"... Hysteria over nothing?

Discuss.

Well, the lasagne is a French product and the french do eat a lot of horsemeat, the problem is not the meat but the veterinary chemicals that are in the meat due to lack of traceablity plus the company are telling lies and false advertising.

Yep, it turns out that Findus Equine Foods have inadvertently been supplying 100% horsemeat lasagnes and only 60% horsemeat lasagnes for those customers of a delicate disposition.

Testing on Findus beef lasagne has revealed some of the ready meals were made entirely from horse meat, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said tonight. Shoppers who bought the lasagne products, which are made by French food supplier Comigel on behalf of Findus, have been warned not to eat them. Findus tested 18 of its beef lasagne products which found 11 meals containing 60% to 100% horse meat, the FSA said.

Whilst the meat appears to be safe to consume, shoppers have been seriously misled about the animal origins of the meat itself. This does indicate that there are some unscrupulous subcontractors out there and that the large food firms and supermakets ought to be doing random and periodic DNA testing on the meat that is supplied to them. That will start to weed out the bad suppliers.

Horsemeat lasagne sounds disgusting BUT probably tastes OK. Myself I much prefer the homemade lasagne I get from Santino's Diner (Take Away) at Newcraighall in Edinburgh. Best I have ever tasted and for only £3.50 unbelievable value! If you are ever in Edinburgh & are near Fort Kinnaird I suggest you give this place a try. He does not always have the lasagne on the menu, but ALL of the food is amazing and all really cheap as well. The only downside is you may have to wait up to 10 mins, but the food is so nice it is WELL worth the wait! If anyone does fancy trying it you can find him behind the church arts centre. It is a big red thing. You cant miss it!

Personally I've not heard anyone say they are sqeamish about eating the horse.

The problem is that it's been sold labelled as beef.

Apart from mislabelling it its the quality control aspects if they dont even know what has gone into the food.

The issue is that a massive company like Findus was able to sell beef that was actually horse. What the hell else is in them?

It may be ok to eat but I personally do not ever want to eat horse meat. If something says it contains beef it should.

I know it's an animal like a cow or chicken and other countries eat it and it's perfectly fine to eat but I don't wanna eat it. I rarely even eat beef and when I do I wanna know it's 100% british beef and that no other bits and bobs are in there.

Its not a question of eating horse meat, its the chance that it could contain harmfull chemicals.

I think people are more concerned over the possibility of consuming strong veterinary drugs.

I dont think I would personally be bothered about eating horsemeat because I eat other meats and dont have a problem with it and alot of people I know have said the same BUT the fact is that its being labelled as something different which is what annoys me because its not right the people get away with making these products and saying one thing but selling another. Also the whole issue on how they are killed makes me quite nervy, I think Findus and whoever else have a lot to answer to.

The fact it's horse isn't exactly irrelevant though. There are plenty of people who wouldn't eat it for moral reasons.
