What are all these comparisons between the two?

The Beatles are nothing like One Direction... Their music is completely different to 1D. Yeah, okay they use real instruments and wrote their own songs, but other than Let it Be, how many of their songs are that lyrically good? Most are very dated in this day and age, and I find some of them cheesy

Who cares if they have more talent anyway? Surely what matters most is which of the two you enjoy listening to the most?

I personally find the Beatles and their tracks appauling, and listening to them makes me feel sad and miserable. However, I find listening to One Direction upbeat, modern and makes me feel good

I'm not slating the Beatles here, I am just saying they are old and no longer current... Move with the times

It doesn't matter, if you like The Beatles, then listen to them and enjoy them.
If you like 1D, then listen to them and enjoy them.
DON'T constantly compare the two ffs! There have been thousands of boybands since The Beatles! Why is it only ever One Direction who get compared to them!?

1. I have never heard anyone compare One Direction to the Beatles except for maybe someone trying to say they're the "next Beatles".

2. Oasis was compared to the Beatles often

The band behind track's like Strawberry fields forever and I am the walrus should never be described as a boyband. Were Iron Maiden and Oasis boybands to?

Am I hallucinating or are people actually making comparisons between The Beatles and One Direction?

Surely this is a dream and a very bad one at that.

What a stupid comparison. It is even worse than when back in 2000, Jo Whiley said on her brief TV show that was on Channel 4, is David Gray the new Bob Dylan.

I take it you didn't read the thread about [paraphrasing] the most stupid thing you've heard someone say about music?

It was mostly made up of that very comparision/argument, towards the end especially.

The media have been making comparisons between One Direction and The Beatles for a while now. The only similarities I can really see are that they're both UK male groups who had worldwide success.

It's just media hype with this comparison really. They're being sensationalistic to sell more papers/get more hits to their website.

Personally, I don't really like either The Beatles or One Direction. I've heard many songs from both of them (who hasn't?), and frankly I'd never listen to them out of choice. They don't do much that interests me musically. Obviously I'm aware of the impact that The Beatles had, and most of my favourite artists wouldn't exist without them, but I can fully understand why someone wouldn't like The Beatles.

That is pretty bad. David Gray can actually sing...

How foolish, everyone knows Angus Stone is the new Bob Dylan.

I've only heard one song from One Direction, and that was just because of Teens React.

look i do not like The Beatles they are not for me but i realise their importance and impact on not just music but popular culture as a whole comparing them is a bit rediculous 1D are just one in along line of Boy bands that come and go like Backstreet Boys, N*sync, Wham, 5ive, NKOTb i could go on. In a few years people will look back on them with a sense of nostalgia rather than the importance and history that surrounds The Beatles.

And as for The Beatles not being current the fact this comparison is being made 30 odd years after they split shows that they and good music will always be relevant and without The Beatles 1D would probably not exist.

This thread is almost as bad as the Kate Bush VS Lady Gaga one

Every band or group that has big success gets compared to The Beatles, just wait a few more years to see if 1D are actually relevant enough to talk about, nevermind be talked about in the same breath as The Beatles.

The best thing about music is that truly great music is timeless, so there is no 'get with the times'.
Plus the Beatles have such a diverse catalogue that trying to pigeon-hole it into one category, emotion or state of mind is an almost impossible task.

The comparison has nothing to do with music. The comparisons are made by the media because 1D get mobbed and have huge crowds whichever country they go to and this is very similar to The Beatles as they too experienced this when they went to other countries. The only reason why 1D get compared to The Beatles is because they're British and the only British group alongside The Beatles to have huge global success.

I've not seen any genuine comparisons between the two. Whenever a young group comes through, and gets girls screaming, they are always the biggest thing since The Beatles. Never the biggest thing since T.Rex, Bay City Rollers, Bros, Take That, or One Direction in the future.

Musically there is no comparison, and it is embarrassing to try.

Oh dear. What a strange statement. I can only put this down to youth.

oh god.... so every band that has young male members are boybands then?...

the wiki defintion makes it quite clear that is not the case for deciding what a boyband is.
