Hi - is it a scam, or does whatsapp now charge Android users?! Just had a message telling me I only have 3 days left so I have to buy a subscription? This right?

Its been like that for quite a while. Free for a one years use and then 69p. I think its still free if you originally installed it when it first came out.

Apple version has always been 69p upfront.

I've uninstalled it a number of times so does it know I've had it for a year by my phone number? Any way to avoid the charge?!

I just went to purchase it and had a message saying it's been extended by a month? So haven't bought it now... why would they extend me by a month for no reason?!

I wouldn't worry about it, just pay 69p when they ask. You can't even get penny sweets these days for that price and it's not bad considering it's an app most people use at least once a day

I thought this was some sort of scam as somebody sent me a message a while ago and I did a Google search to find it was a scam?

They might have started charging though, but I guess 69p is worth it (even though I only use it to send a picture message a couple of times a week) ?

Whilst that's true, there are plenty of equally-capable alternatives out there that are completely free.
The only issue is finding one your friends use.
