I'm glad they've left it over a year for this theme tune to be played, it makes it more special to the character exit and Zainabs tonight was emotional. Before Tonights it was used 10 times in the space off 3 years. I'm hoping they save the next one for another moment like tonights

How was it out of touch? The exit of Zainab prompted the end of a long running storyline for the Masood's, an event the more than warrent's the use of the theme. It wasn't created merely for the use of specific character exits.

It worked really well and had the desired effect.

I think Zainab deserved it as well, 5 years may seem a short time but she's been very popular since the start and as an actress Nina Wadia has provided some excellent performances during her time there. Stacey was there 6 years and had Julia's Theme 3 times, all of them worked though and fitted each scene perfectly, especially the last one which ended up as an updated Kathy exit!

I don't think she was ever in the league of Peggy or Grant Mitchell, and I thought that's what Julia's Theme stood for; sadly IMHO, the show's depreciated to the point where Zainabs a big fish in a small pond, thus the Julia's theme - still don't think it was warranted.....

NO. The Theme is for endings where the 'Duff,Duff' doesn't really work.

It was great that Zaniab got the Julia's theme because she is a great character and she truly deserve but the way that her exit storyline was written it wasn't needed. In other words the terrible writing in tonight's episode ruined the Julia's theme.

Feminine is what basically spells Julia's Theme - the penny drops!

Nice one Dan!

I totally agree. Julia's theme should only be used for truly Iconic characters. Zainab is certainly not in that category. When it's used for lesser characters, it cheapens the effect.

It's just the theme music arranged differently

I was pleasantly surprised when I heard it tonight, not because I though Zainab didn't deserve it, just because it was a shock.

Zainab totally needed a Julias Theme though, she has been a fantastic character for years.

It doesn't matter how often it's used. All of the times it has been used, it has fitted the scene.

Just look at the description for the first time it was used "Ian Beale cries into the arms of his grandmother Lou after a heart-to-heart, because his father Pete disapproves of him becoming a chef."....hardly ground breaking stuff, is it?

My favourite Julia's theme moment is Frank's funeral or when Nigel told Clare that Debbie had died. I absolutely balled my eyes out at that one .

Julia's theme WAS NOT created for the sole benefit of a character leaving. Iconic or not, it was created for the use of a build up to the end titles when the duff duff's are not considered to be approriate to the ending. That is what it was created for and that is how it should be used, not dependant on who is popular based on the opinions of individual viewers.

Those of you saying Zainab didn't deserve Julia's Theme:

Zainab was a character which brought both drama and laughter... not many characters do this and she will go down in history as a memorable and much-loved character.

Nina Wadia was outstanding throughout! Julia's Theme, as explained by exec producers, is used to represent a 'bitter-sweet' exit where the show is suffering a huge loss and Zee was definitely a BIG loss.

It's a big misconception that Julia's Theme is some kind of hugely prestigious thing awarded only to the most iconic or noteworthy characters. It was simply designed to be used in situations where the usual dramatic 'cliffhanger' theme isn't appropriate, and that's all it's ever been. The first ever Julia's Theme was used for Ian Beale crying because Pete didn't want him to be a chef, for God's sake.

They couldn't have used the duff duff ending after tonights scenes, there was no shock ending or Cliff hanger just pure emotion, it wasn't just Zainab's departure, it was the end of a Masood era and like it or not they have played a massive part in the square over the last five years. The scenes toward the end were beautifully done, the goodbyes, little Kamil with his Dad and then smiling up at his Mum in the taxi, Tamwars reaction and Masood following the cab, Zainabs tears. The duff duffs wouldn't have been as effective as Julias Theme.
