All of them have a redeeming factor to them, and I don't think any have actually been anywhere near bad, or even average.

My favourite (and only in coincidence my first) Doctor was Christopher Eccleston. He balanced the dark and mysterious with the witty and daft all at the same time. Tennant added too much soap-opera, and Smith doesn't pull off the angry scenes as well as Eccleston ever did.

For me, Smith would be a solid runner-up to Eccles, whilst in terms of classic Doctors my favourites from what I've seen are Hartnell and Pertwee.

I'll go with Pertwee for saving the show and bringing it up to date. I can't think of a bad story in his era. However, Tom Baker runs him very close as the show reached its peak in ratings and quality terms on his watch and his mixture of horror and comedy was excellent.
However, why has no one mentioned Peter Cushing, as Dalek Invasion Earth was excellent?

I'll be rounded up and turned into a Roboman. Actually this was quite a good film and Cushing seems influenced by William Hartnell.

For Pertwee to "save the show and bring it up to date" probably very much needed to happen back then, but now, to me anyway, his era doesn't seem like "proper" Doctor Who. Being exiled to modern (or near-modern) day Earth and being unable (for most of his tenure) to use the Tardis to travel elsewhere and elsewhen just feels wrong to me.

Peter Cushing played a human scientist named "Doctor Who" and not an alien called "The Doctor" in two films versions of Hartnell TV stories. So good as Peter Cushing was in those films, he is not part of the official canon and should not be included in this poll.

Here we go again! Well my favourite from the original series was Pat Troughton. But this time I have voted for David Tennant, who brought the NEW -WHO into the 21st century!

Tom Baker. He was the Doctor when I was a kid and had one of the best runs of great stories in the shows history in series 13 and 14 (if we overlook Android Invasion). No Doctor will ever replace Tom in my affections.

Historically I'd go for Patrick Troughton, but recently I'd go for Christopher Eccleston's portrayal as it was damn powerful.

I went for Paul. I'm not sure he stands much chance though.
