Was Janet unable to secure a record deal or something? I thought there were many companies interested in when she exited the competition. I think this fan funded project has disaster written all over it. Regardless of how talented she is these things never seem to work. I presume she'll be hoping to attract the interest of a label after releasing this?

I can't really think what you're basing the pessimism on, as PledgeMusic and the like have only really been around for a couple of years or so and my impression is that artists' experiences have been overwhelmingly positive.

I became aware of the Pledge site a year or so back when a performer with five solo albums behind him went there to launch his sixth. Local or niche bands seem often only to be looking for £1000-£2000 to fund their recording projects, Janet's target must I think have been £25k or more and was pretty quickly reached. There'll be nobody to lean on her as regards her album's content, nobody to tell her who she has to work with, no chance of being dropped and no label to go bust or lose interest when it finds someone new to promote - if she can run a performing and recording career that way, what's not to like?

She turned down several offers from labels because their ideas didn't fit with what she's about as an artist.

For example one company's "big plan" was to release 'Your Song' at Christmas. (she questioned this as being a good idea like everyone else would seeing as Ellie Goulding had already done this recently)

Her Pledge Music campaign success so far has attracted more interest from labels and it looks like she's going to sign a deal to release a single with a record label before the album is released.

Saying "these things never seem to work" kind of shows your lack of knowledge of these types of campaigns and how much the music industry is evolving.
As an example Charlie Simpson funded his debut solo album via Pledge Music. It reached number 6 in the UK album charts.
Established artists currently and recently using the format to fund projects include Kate Nash, The Beach Boys and Martha Wainwright.
The Lumineers have also funded projects previously with them and now look at their success.

I believe her target goal was probably around £60k and it has surpassed that by a further 20%, so far, with some of the money going to benefit Childline a charity of which she is an ambassador of.

All of this, along with the songwriters and producers she's working with, seems as though she has a decent chance at success this way.

I wish her every success with it all.
