So i was in the Apple store yesterday
I picked up one of the black iphone 5's from the dock it was sat on and i saw all the paint chipped off at the bottom and i remembered that people said they were taking them back and getting a new one, well i asked one of the sales people "so you must have loads of people bringing back the black version to exchange it because of paint damage" , he said well no, we dont change them under warranty for that.
Is that right? i thought it came under warranty and i thought people WERE getting them exchanged? maybe i got my wires crossed somewhere |

Pretty sure it would count as wear and tear, so not covered under warranty.

People were getting them changed out because they were arriving in the box chipped... which is damaged goods. Apple just give a fair bit more time than others to swap it out so people were taking them in saying they had arrived like that.. weeks after they got them. However if you make a big enough stink in an Apple store especially if you have more than one Apple product registered they will sort you out 9 out of 10 times.

It's all down to whether it's of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. You would expect things to wear over time, but if you are taking very good care of the device, but the paint is coming off then that wouldn't be satisfactory quality and would be something they would have to remedy.
If you knocked it on something though and others have no marks on theirs then there wouldn't be anything you could do. A knock by you is wear and tear. People are saying on Youtube that it isn't wearing well. The aluminium edges are very easily marked and it's not very durable design wise. |

One of my friends doesn't even have a case on his, puts it in his pocket with keys, chucks it about. yes it is dinged and scratched but his 3Gs looked much worse after a few months..

The iPhone 5 is anodised, not painted. Thought I would mention it to avoid confusion.

The suggestion is that poor quality control of the manufacture of the iPhone 5 case means that the dye is not adhering properly to the aluminium. |
