Mobile Phones 20 Years Old Today

Britain's first mobile phone call was made across the Vodafone network on 1 January 1985 by comedian Ernie Wise. Phones cost about £2000 and had a battery life of about 20 minutes.

It took Vodafone almost 9 years to get 1 Million customers. Today it has 14 Million customers & 90% of the population has a mobile phone.

It's amazing to see that it took Vodafone 9 years to get 1,000,000 customers - and now look how many people use mobiles!

An old boss of mine had one of those huge briefcase things.
He thought he looked cool But made me carry it when walking in offices etc!

And they cost a small fortune to use, im sure it was around about a quid a minute to call out

I'm 16, and I remember when I was younger I remember the one2one adverts about pay as you go... where coins were going into the top of the handset... I honestly thought WTF...

That was when my mum bought the Motorola Manhattan. In 8-9 years they had evolved a lot! Brick, with 2 line monochrome text display. Text messaging, but only just With an extendable antenna...

One other thing I forgot about the Moto manhattan... the fact that if the battery ran out you could use 4xAA Batteries to run it

Yup, ours is sitting in the drawer behind me!

Im surprised it still works.....well sort of.....you need to use AA batteries as the charger for it broke years ago.
