I want to buy a new tablet

I want to browse the web, listen to loads of music and maybe use apps.

I want it to be portable to carry to work, on the bus and on the train.

What is better out of the nexus or ipad?

Whichever one meets your needs, price range, and fits in best with the other things you use.

Does anybody have both?

My wife got rid of her ipad when she saw my Nexus7.

But she eventually bought a playbook, so not sure if that helps

Go have a play with both. Most shops sell both of them and have them on demo.

Also, do you already have an iphone or an android phone? If so go with the OS that you already know.

It depends on your budget really, and on how much music you have,as neither of those may suit you as you cannot add any extra storage without messing about, unless you use cloud/streaming.

I have had both, currently have the iPad mini, I would probably go with the nexus as your not locked into iTunes for your music and have a few more options with the android platform.

You could even look at the kindle fire hd as well. I hate tablets at the moment there's a lot of good ones out at the moment to choose from.

iTunes music has been DRM free for years. My Sony phone plays iTunes stuff just fine.

The only use iTunes as a music manager to transfer music to my iPad wirelessly. I've never bought music from there.

Tbh I can afford either really if I want too.
I have just checked and the nexus 7 is £230 for the 32GB version and the iPad mini for example is £450 for the 32GB mobile and wifi version.
Also I have loads of music bought from the iTunes Store. Can they be transferred to the nexus as I'm reading online that you need a third party software

I see. How do you find the nexus 7 for listening to music? Is the music quality through headphones good?

It's as good as any other player/mp3 I've used including my 80gb ipod. Transferring your music to the Nexus7 should be pretty pain free although I have a deep hatred for itunes and no longer allow it near any of my PC's, so I can't be certain.

As you have a lot of music on itunes, it follows that you have an apple device already and therefore are probably used to the way apple do things in which case I would recommend you go for the ipad as transferring your stuff to that would be pretty seamless.

Go to a shop which has both, try playing around with both of them, see which operating system feels best and most intuitive for you. Buy the one you like best.

Shops which will have both include PC World, John Lewis, Currys, etc.

Apple folk say that about all Apple products but its BS. You'll see if you go to a shop and play with them youself.

The aspect ratios are different. The iPad is 4:3 and the Nexus is 16:9. Opinions differ regarding which is best depending on which church you worship at.

I'd say 4:3 is better for web browsing and 16:9 is better for tv\films\fitting in your pocket.

For everything else it's a draw.

Yeah they both do that.

Despite some claims, the Ipad won't fit into the majority of coat pockets. The Nexus 7 will. If you're always carrying a bag with you, of course, this won't matter.

Down to personal preference. Do you prefer iOS or Android? What does your phone use? If you have a Mac and/or an Iphone, you migh tbe happier with the Ipad. If you don't already have any Apple products, there is (IMHO!) very little advantage to jump into the Apple ecosystem now.

edit:ah, just seen your last post. If you're all Appled up already, and budget isn't an issue, not sure why you're hesitating?

No 3rd party software needed to transfer music to Nexus 7.

Didn't someone post something almost exactly like this yesterday?

I still think that is a little misleading. No 3rd party software is needed to transfer music onto either the iPad or nexus. However, 3rd party software is very useful on both devices to organise music.

And there is no need to lock yourself into any ecosystem. The only purchases I've made are apps (both free or paid for) which is the same for both android and iOS.

I am thinking of getting the Nexus.
Some of my friends are telling me the ipad mini isn't worth £450 and since the nexus is only £230 (saving myself £200) it makes sense as a student to go for this option.

I won't be using the tablet all the time, just when i am travelling as i am sick to death of browsing on a small screen, plus the battery life on the iphone sucks.

The 32GB wi-fi model is £199. There's a model with HSPA+ for £239.

I'd never heard of HSPA+, but this Wikipedia article has some info on it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HSPA%2B - perhaps someone more knowledgeable might be able to advise whether it's worth getting or not? Apologies if you're already up to speed on it.
