30 (21) Gary Windass 10.09% (Round 2)
Just making the top 30, and with a 9 place drop, it’s Gary Windass. I think Gary was actually pretty lucky to make the top 30, he’s seem to have lost quite a bit of a popularity over the past year, and only just made it through to the top 30 due to a weak heat. Most of Gary’s year has involved the surrogacy storyline, and him attempting to have a baby with Izzy as many ways as possible. This storyline hasn’t been that popular on DS and lots of people have started to find Gary quite annoying, the character was in a good position 2 years ago and made the top 20 in this, however he now seems to be detiorating a bit as a character, will he take a turn for the better in 2013?

In 29th place, and with a pretty similar ranking to last year, we have Maria Connor. I’ve like Maria, however I don’t think she’s an exceptional character so this is probably the right place for her. Maria’s had a big year in terms of relationships, originally with Jason Grimshaw, she soon realised she was in love with her gay best friend Marcus Dent, and did the seemingly impossible by turning him straight, and starting a relationship with him! Despite the relationship originally causing problems for people and inducing a big fall out in the street, Maria and Marcus now seem to be in a happy position, but will that last throughout the year?

Next up and with a pretty impressive rise, it’s Marcus Dent! Marcus is personally one of my favourite characters on the soap currently, so I’m please to see him rise this much! I think that, despite the fact that he appears to not be gay anymore, Marcus has always been a great representation of a gay man, and much better than that dreadful Sean! He’s had a pretty big year on the soap; after finally breaking up with Sean, he embarked on a relationship with Aiden. However there was soon a twist in the tale as surprisingly Marcus found himself falling in love with his best friend Maria, and they are now in a relationship! Will Marcus continue to rise the rankings next year?

In 27th place, and actually with a tiny rise, it’s Tina McIntyre! I say with a surprise, as Tina is the only character from the surrogacy storyline who has seemed to have benefited from it, which is surprising considering she is at the forefront of it all! Kevin was in a pretty bad position 2 years ago when this competition first started, fresh after the reveal of the Molvin affair, and it damaged his chances in the competition as he only ranked 37th! However he now seems to be getting back on track and is gaining popularity, however probably still not as popular as he might have been a few years ago. Kevin’s a great character and has had many storylines in his long time on the show, most of his storylines in the past year have involved his attempts to get back with Sally and his relationships with the rest of the family, and more recently he has become involved with the Kirsty/Tyrone storyline. He started off the year in a relationship with Rosie Webster, however after she moved to London he moved on to Maria Connor. That soon fell apart after she left him for previous gay best friend Marcus Dent! He’s now moved on to someone a bit older than his usual partners, Rovers landlady Stella Price. I actually love his relationship with Stella and have enjoyed him as a character this year, what will 2013 bring for him?

However Emily is sparsely seen now and usually just in the background of scenes, which is why she never does that well in this competition. 2012 has seen many scenes of Emily in the company of the older characters such as Norris, Rita and Dennis. It also show her charitable side once again as she took in Tracy and Amy after they had no where else to go. Will Emily have a bigger part in the soap in 2013?

In 23rd place, and with a reasonable drop, it’s Julie Carp! There’s been a bit of a public turnaround for Julie over the past few months, as people really haven’t liked the way she’s acted during the Kirsty/Tyrone storyline, and has seemed to have lost quite a bit of popularity! I think she is a great character, and she was once very popular on here when she almost made the top 10 in the 2011 competition. I think she works well on the street and fits in well as one of the factory girls, and I don’t think her and Brian are a bad couple. Will Julie be able to regain her fans next year?

22 (14) Anna Windass 14.27% (Round 2)
In 22nd place we have Anna Windass! I think Anna is a great character, and one of the nicest and most well meaning characters on the soap. I don’t think the characters changed that much since last year, however she kind of doesn’t have the same momentum she did at the time of the competition last year, and therefore her drop isn’t that surprising. However she failed to make the top 30 in the 2011 competition, showing that she has improved as a character in the eyes of DS! 2012 has mostly seen her settle into the new Windass/Armstrong unit, and she has supported her son Gary with his attempt to have a baby, whilst struggling to keep with adoptive daughter Faye. What will 2013 bring for the character of Anna?

In 20th place and with a bit of a rise we have Mary Taylor! This is actually Mary's highest ranking to date in this competition, which is deserved I think as she really has been a great character over the past year, and I was actually hoping she'd rise even more. 2012 has seen Mary take a new direction as she moved from Norris and started with her new project- Roy Cropper! I think her scenes with Roy were great though, whilst her chasing Norris was mostly just funny, we actually saw a lot more dimensions to the character of Mary during this storyline, and I ended up feeling quite a lot of sympathy for her
Mary's themed cafe nights were great as well, and actually one of the highlights of my year for Corrie! I just found it so hilarious and loved watching Mary take the cafe to a new country each night 
Will Mary strengthen as a character over the next year?

Ken is the longest standing character in any soap, having been in Corrie since the first episode in 1960, and I think he's done more than enough to gain his title as a legendary character. He's definitely had his fair share of explosive storylines over the years, however now he's getting a bit older seems to take more of a backseat and he is mostly involved in attempting to keep his son Peter under control. William Roche seems like he doesn't care as much as once did and doesn't really act that much anymore, however I think he's definitely created a legacy over his time on the show, and will hopefully still be here for a few more years yet to come!

ETA Just seen Ken @ 19, think he should be top 10 as he is one of the oldies I think still conrtibutes very well to storylines and is a great character but still nice to see him in top 20 at least!

18 (11) Eileen Grimshaw 15.72% (Round 2)
Next up and with another big drop, it's Eileen Grimshaw. It's strange to see the character who was about 2 points away from winning the competition in 2011 drop this low, however the character of Eileen really has worsened in recent times. I really think the pairing of Eileen with Paul was a bad move from the producers, I think the character of Eileen works a lot better single, and certainly a lot better without someone as dull as Paul! We do still get glimpses of the old Eileen though, and her scenes with Gail in her recent storyline with Lewis were great! It does seem like the character has lost her prime that she had a few years ago though, will things change for Eileen in 2013?

16 (52) Beth Tinker 16.38% (Round 2)
Just missing out on the top 15 and with a massive rise in rankings, it's Beth Tinker! Beth was very new to the street this time last year, so I think that explains her low ranking, however I did predict that she'd be absolutely brilliant and rise a lot in the rankings this year, and she definitely did not disappoint For me, Beth is just about the best comedy character they have on Corrie at the moment, and she's definitely the one I laugh at the most! She also works well with the other factory girls and brings a great dynamic to the whole workplace. In 2012 we've also seen Beth find love with Kirk, a relationship that I think works really well! Will Beth be able to climb even further in the rankings next year?

Absolutely delighted to see the overly cliched, disgustingly stereo-typed monstrosity that is 'Sean Tully' so low in this poll. Should have been rock bottom really though. When are the producers (or whoever does the casting) going to get the message about the majority of viewers opinion of this character/man and AXE HIM!!

I'd rather watch an episode that was a two hander for Sunita's twins than 2 minutes of Sean hamming it up in the Rovers. Worst actor in soap.
