Marks & Spencer Valentine meal deals...
JOHNOR
12-02-2013
I've just bought one for Thursday, I think it's really good value at £20, I got -

Starter - King prawns with garlic & parsley

Main - 2 sirloin steaks, fresh chips, mixed veg (bought some red wine sauce separate)

Dessert - 2 chocolate praline pyramids.

You also get a box of chocolates and a bottle of cava (or wine) included.

Never had any if their meal deals before, but i'm hoping it tastes as good as it looks.

Anyone ever had one?

What is a fresh chip? Is it raw, par boiled, once fried?

I've been tempted to get this but my boyfriend is going to be at work anyway.

I've only had the £10 meal deals which aren't much of a bargain as the wine usually tastes like toilet cleaner. Hopefully the cava is an improvement. Judging by the difference you're paying £10 for a small box of chocolates, a starter, and a better quality plonk.

Let me know what the cava is like and I might go for it

It's just chips that aren't frozen it says "fresh chips" on the packaging. They look lovely, actually, really thick and fluffy on the outside.

Trouble is you flock to a shop for what has been advertised and there's none left! but will give it a try tomorrow.

We had this deal last year and it was delicious. The steaks were very good. Pretty good value I think, cheaper than eating out.

Just picked up this years deal today, Tandoori King prawns with a dip, peppered steaks, potato rosti, Strawberry and champagne desserts, chocs and red wine. Looking forward to it

Depends on your pans and setup but here is what I do.

Preheat oven to 180/200
Spanking hot cast iron pan (on high heat on hob for 5-10 minutes).
Steak with a little seasoning and a rub of oil.
Put steak in pan for one minute.
Turn steak and transfer pan to oven.
Cook for 2 minutes.
Remove from oven.
Transfer steak to warm plate to rest.

With the steaks I get from ASDA (usually sirloin or rump between 8 & 10oz) this will give me a rare to medium rare steak (depending on thickness)

Cheers degsy, seems simple enough. I have one of those griddle pans, will that do?

Yes but I find they don't cook as fast.

But you do get the nice chargrill lines so try
45 one side, 1/4 turn for another 45 secs.
Turn the steak and do the same.
Then oven for a minute or two. You may want to try the doneness test to check the progress.

we used to get a lot of them, but you need to pick carefully.

it's definetely 2 sirloin steaks - I got mine today, if I'd bought them on their own (not with the meal deal) they would have been £8.60 for 2 large steaks

Had the meal deal last night. Crab gratin, Beef Wellington with chunky chips and billionaires desserts with a box of chocolates and a bottle of Petit Chablis. All excellent and well worth £20.

It ends tomorrow (Saturday)

Mine was really lovely, the chips were to die for.

Anyone know if they do that £10 weekend dine in every weekend?

I hope you enjoyed your meal OP but I have a massive issue with M&S and their meal deals for special occasions!

Had you done the meal deal a week ago you'd have paid a tenner for a main, side, dessert and bottle of wine! So for an extra tenner you get an extra dish and some choccies.. a proper rip off IMO.

The actual £10 meal deal can be excellent value though!

They don't do it every weekend but I'd say they def have it 3 weekends out of 4?

Was it the same food? I can't see how they could possibly do crab gratin, fillet of beef Wellington and Petit Chablis for £10. The wine alone or the Wellington alone costs that.

Was different to the Dine in for £10 Rainbowgirl!

As Walterwhite says you have a choice of much more expensive mains and wines (I went for the Rosada Cava!)

The £10 meal deal is very good VFM but limited if you are a vegetarian, like myself, and don't like goat cheese. Why has goat cheese become the vegetarian option everywhere, it has an unpleasant aftertaste and there are hundreds of bovine and ovine cheeses that could be used instead.
As for the wine in the M&S deals I find it most agreeable but if, as a previous correspondent suggests, it tastes like "toilet cleaner" perhaps they might like to recommend a good colour and vintage of Harpic!
