All emails provide diagnostic info for tracing network route etc.

My email headers do not include my home telephone number and neither will anyone elses.

Fact: Orange mail does not include your Orange mobile number.

An IP address is not a home phone number Steve.

The average email normally contains enough information for someone to traise it back to it's sender. You can hide or 'spoof' this information, but most don't.

Which seems like a good idea (to not do so) and is why I said that maybe it's something that should be raised with Three in my last post.

It means that Three sends your phone number with every email you send where as no other network, cellular or landline based does.

Also, just in case anyone is confused, such as lalaland, I am well aware of TCP IP protocol.

In fact, I'm the kind of guy who can do many things with an IP address.

But what I cant do is obtain someones phone number from email headers, unless like three mail its included!

Cool, I didnt really want a full explanation, I know all those letters and digits mean something. Sarcasm got the better of me

I bet you could write binary code! No offence intended, you really do seem to know what your talking about.

But it's also a bit scary knowing that my mobile no. will be sent with an email if I ever did use it again.(Stopped using after it became chargable!)
Is it like a kind of reverse dns?

I used to write machine code when I was about 13....bit of a headache though...C++ and VB is alot easier these days

No. In fact the mobile number included in Three email headers relates to authentication only - the user name authorised to send via three servers. Your mobile number would not resolve to an ip address(kinda like dns), except via Three's own network management system.

Additionally every three phone is presetup for email - [three mobile number]@3mail.com is your email address and password is your voicemail pin, however by registering they divert an additional email eg steve007@3mail.com to [my three mobile number]@3mail.com

Big Brother - yes I know, its worrying. I mean in principle Three are great. I love the videomail and the thought of video calls to fiends and family, but there are certain areas that three need to improve.

1) walled garden needs to go
2) english customer services only please
3) secure email via my own servers
4) voice calls via 2g only please - prevent call dropping....

If three acheived points 1, 2 and 3 I might port my Orange numbers in and join them on contract. But as it stands I need quality. Its a shame - 3 have great potential if they improve after sales and certain technical barriers.

I guess I'm from a different generation to some extent, where the mobile is still seen as a luxury item - luxury items cost money. Its pointless having something if it doesnt perform. Cost, to some degree, is irrelevant for me.

Three is a bit like a great looking car that when you get in and drive it, handles and drives very very badly.

I'm signing up to orange 3g this month, so we shall see how they compare to 3.

I agree with you really, I do like 3, I suppose because of value, but they do need to ahemm

I think we kind of agree on some points, although it may not always seem that way!

I think a really fantastic articulate post on 3g.co.uk from a user called 3GSU, sums it up better than I ever could. I think it makes alot of sense what he says:

Almost as small as many GSM models this really was the first handset from 3 to gain widespead trade and user acceptance. It was followed by the updated U-8120 which does not seem to have been a dissapointment either for most.

Now we have Motoroala A-1000's, e1000's and c975's that should work pretty well on 3. The older Nokia 7600's and NEC e616's and e228's have been given away in the hope they can produce some ThreePay revenue.

More new models are on the way. There is better coverage. customer Service (still lousy) has improved. Services with the exception of 'Today on 3' seem stagnant. Video Messaging is welcome, but some charges appear to be creeping up (as expected). The network has improved but is still in need of some serious improvement. Calls still drop, texts and MMS dissapear, handsets have to be re-booted and services often take more than one attempt to appear. Most customers who have experience of mobiles just dont expect this from the latest incarnation of the technology. Many will accept the drawbacks and say that its worth the saving (with all the crazy loss making deals now available) but its hardly the way to build a reputation for quality that will sustain 3 in the longer term.

Here's to 2005 and to the hope of better performance from 3 (even if they get the basics improved that would be a big plus). The kit now being sold looks pretty good, marketing is professional and the overall feel of the product gives an impression of qulaity, lets see that reflected in the user experience now that the aquisition levels have reached nearly 3 million in the UK. No point in attracting folks and letting them down eh?

I'll maybe have a wee toast to Bob Fuller (3's UK CEO + Mr Giveaway) etc tonight and hope he and his team can deliver a service that will satisfy folks rather than having to post complaints on forums like this one.

As for 3GSU, been following 3GSU and that site for a while.

Well written, can't match it in terms of quality ,but don't agree with all 3GSU's opinions, but 3GSU is entitled as we all are.

I'm fed up of Three, i have 590 (i think) minutes to use up soon as my phones on ebay and now as of tonight everytime i call someone it rings then when they answer it cuts off straight away and have phoned them up about this and they said they had passed on the info to this department and it will be fixed in about 48 hours!!!!
My phones only on ebay for 3 days so that is a right con three should handle their network better, i'm keeping the one phone after i sell that as i made a 7 minute call on T-Mobile and it only cost 73p AND it was to another network!

Yep, been happening to me aswell tonight.

But nice and cheap though, and not too much of a problem to redial.

Or their are always payphones......now that is bad

So i take it there is a network problem then? 3 probably couldnt handle new year as the top up service wasn't connecting on new years day! We got the old "Thank you for holding we are currently experiencing exceptional demand for our threepay service, please continue to hold and your call will be answered as soon as possible" I remember hearing that everytime i wanted my balance then i would get norah jones after it

they seemed to have fixed that hold problem up until new year when they were getting loads of calls so I take it that means that there would have been loads of new ThreePay customers at christmas as they would've got a new phone for christmas

But 3's problems seem so wide and varied.

I mean every network has a negative aspect, but Three's seem to be wide and varied - poor customer service, calls dropped/inability to make call, walled browsing, email security, expiring top ups and more.

For some of us, for me at least, in the line of work I am in, I cannot afford to miss a call or have a call dropped.

For me, the £120 spent on the LG wont break the bank (if needed i'll unlock it ) - for me its important to save money where possible, BUT without sacrificing quality of service and loss of my time. I forsee loss of both these things with Three. Yesterday I sent 3 picture messages with Three. 2 arrived, 1 didnt. I then spent 10 minutes ringing Three and translating (almost literally) my problem to india.

The customer services REALLY ARE a joke... my friend phoned up to get his PUK code, they said they would get it but phone up in 48HOURS!!! but he phoned up on 23rd december, and nobody was there on xmas day!!

So as you can see I was replying directly to your quotes and stating that all emails contain personal information, as an IP address can be classed as personal information, and then you reply telling me that all emails do not contain home telephone numbers. I never said it did and it appeared at the time that maybe you got the IP and phone number confused from your response to my quote.

However, back on topic, I have just sent an email to Three customer services raising concern that this personal information is made available via the email header and am now awaiting their response. I will post it here when it comes back.

Your response was irrelevant. My post was not about IP addresses being included in email headers. It was about a telephone number. Therefore your response was out of context.

I replied learn to read because I couldnt believe that anyone could fail to see the point I was making.

The point is 3 headers contain a telephone number, not that 3 headers contain IP addresses. Therefore your statement that "all emails do this" was incorrect in the context of my original email.
