1. Global Radio's £70m deal to buy Smooth Radio parent GMG Radio could lead to higher prices for advertisers in seven areas of the UK, the Competition Commission has ruled in a provisional decision. The competition regulator is minded to rule that the merger of Global brands including Capital and Heart with GMG Radio's Real Radio and Smooth Radio could lessen competition in the local advertising market in areas including Manchester, Cardiff and Central Scotland. More.

2. Ofcom has re-awarded two more commercial radio licences to the current licensees, Wessex FM in Weymouth and Yorkshire Coast Radio in Scarborough. The two stations, both owned by UKRD, will retain their right to broadcast on FM for another seven years after their individual expiry dates this year. The licences have been re-awarded under Ofcom’s ‘fast-track’ process, as set out in published guidelines when there is no competition for a licence. More.

3. Following the surrender of a community radio licence in Hammersmith, Ofcom will be inviting community radio applications on FM within the M25 in 2014. There are at least three AM frequencies also available, because three groups which were offered licences to operate on medium wave have not launched their services. Ofcom was expected to invite South East applications in the first half of 2014 but stated there are no suitable FM or AM frequencies available within this area. More.

4. DAB+ test transmissions going under the name of “Brighton Experimental” along with seagull noises and chilled out music are now on-air. The service, operated by the Office of Communications appears to be two DAB+ channels from Sussex Heights with a loop of announcements on each one titled BEX6 and BEX7. The streams are at 88.0kBit/s and are thought to be operated by a local Ofcom engineer and are given a subtitle of DABv2 and DABv2KMx. It is thought they will be on-air till February 4th 2013. More.

5. The UK government will make a public announcement about switching off analogue radio transmissions during the fourth quarter of 2013. No date has been confirmed yet but any statement may include a timetable for a switchover to a mainly DAB radio network, although FM transmissions will not end completely. Laurence Harrison, technology and market development director of Digital Radio UK says a switchover for radio could only go ahead once two criteria had been met. These state that local DAB coverage has to be 90 percent and national UK coverage equivalent to FM, while 50 percent of all radio listening would have to over digital platforms. More.

6. Ofcom is inviting applications for community radio licences to operate on medium wave, which gives the band at least another 7 years life. Applicants will be able to apply later this year, which, if the usual Ofcom path is taken, means licences will be given out in early 2014 and stations will have two years to start broadcasting on a five year licence. More.

1. Chip maker Intel has confirmed that it is working on a set-top box that would stream content to connected TV sets. Speaking at AllThingsDigital’s ‘Dive Into Media’ conference, Erik Huggers, general manager of Intel Media, suggested the device would offer “a vastly superior experience” to today’s cable STBs. Although Intel is traditionally a business-facing company with little exposure to the consumer, Huggers said the company was keen to enter the segment on the basis that it could control every aspect of the service, from chips to software, to get it right. Intel has been struggling in the fiercely competitive chip market. Any such service would be dependent on the co-operation of content owners, a point recognised by Huggers, who suggested that media companies were showing some flexibility. “I think we can bring an incredible TV experience via the Internet, to consumers, and that is a great opportunity for programmers,” he said. He described the planned service not as a value play, but rather “a quality play”. More.

2. Simon Beresford-Wylie has been appointed chief executive officer of Digital Mobile Spectrum Limited (DMSL). The joint venture between EE, Telefonica, O2, Three and Vodafone is responsible for ensuring viewers continue to receive Freeview when new 4G services are launched. DMSL Chairman, Andrew Pinder, said, "Ensuring Britain's terrestrial TV continues uninterrupted while Britain benefits from 4G at 800 MHz is a huge responsibility. The appointment of a highly experienced leader with a deep understanding of mobile telecoms and complex project delivery is an important step for the successful introduction of 4G on this new spectrum band in the UK." More.

3. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO delivered his views on the growing enthusiasm for OLED screens. “They’re awful,” he told an investor conference organised by Goldman Sachs in San Francisco. “If you ever buy anything online and really want to know what the colour is, as many people do, you should really think twice before you depend on the colour from an OLED display,” Cook said, while later citing Apple’s own retina displays as being twice as bright and a superior experience. More.

4. Freesat is celebrating a figure of 3 million product sales by adding YouTube to its free satellite arsenal. Gross retails sales are now over £1 billion, the service noted in a press release, a figure achieved during the last four years (well, just over). YouTube is a first for free-to-air British TV, and a novel move, meaning you can watch your cute kitty videos on the big screen without the need for an Xbox or other device with a YouTube app. Apparently YouTube on Freesat will be fully interactive, not to mention optimised for the TV screen. It has been built using HTML5. More.

5. There are rumours circulating that Sky is planning to close its Freesat from Sky service. It has been suggested the broadcaster would stop offering the product, which offers a basic line-up of channels without a subscription, as terrestrial broadcasters launch their Freesat service in the spring. More.

6. Luxembourg, February 5, 2013 – SES S.A. (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) is pleased to announce the induction of Romain Bausch, President and CEO of SES, into the Satellite Hall of Fame of the U.S.-based Society of Satellite Professionals International (SSPI). The induction ceremony will take place on March 19 at the SSPI's Annual Gala in the context of the Satellite 2013 industry event in Washington D.C. More.

7. Nigerian broadcaster Arise Networks is launching two channels aimed at an audience in Europe, Arise News HD and Arise 360. Arise Networks was founded by Nigerian publisher Nduka Obaigbena, publisher of This Day Newspaper and Arise Magazine. Arise News has news centres in London, New York, Lagos and Johannesburg and across international news bureaux in Washington DC, Dakar, Nairobi, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, New Delhi and Los Angeles. More.

8. FilmFlex has announced a new partnership with the UK cablenet Virgin Media. The multiyear agreement covers the the development, rollout and management of next generation video-on-demand services as well as procuring and curating film content for Virgin Movies. Initial product developments planned in 2013 include the introduction of multi-device playback through Virgin TV Anywhere, Virgin Media’s cloud-based entertainment service. FilmFlex and Virgin Media also plan to work together on the further development of the movies-on-demand service offered on Virgin Media TiVo. More.

9. Sky is giving talented young people from across the country the chance to start a career in the television industry with the launch of a newly expanded apprenticeship scheme. Applications are open from now and over the coming weeks for the 98 apprenticeship places available under the scheme. Successful applicants will receive training and support to develop valuable skills in areas such as broadcast operations, creative services and marketing. The expansion of Sky’s apprenticeship scheme to these new areas builds on the success of its apprenticeships in Technology, Engineering and Customer Service, which have already helped over 300 young people to kick start their working life. 10. Protecting children from inappropriate content in the digital world is something Sky has always taken extremely seriously. In the connected world, it’s never been easier to access a wealth of information and entertainment, but, at the same time, it’s also presented a number of challenges in terms of providing a safe and enjoyable environment for kids. It’s an issue which parents are understandably concerned about and which has quite rightly taken its place high up the political agenda. More.

    11. News Corp is again investing heavily in a digital future. This time the initial $1 billion is going to secure video content for News Corp’s book and newspaper publishing arm – which is shortly to be hived off into a separate entity. More.

    12. Japan will start the world’s first 4K TV broadcast in July 2014, two years earlier than originally planned. According to the Asahi Times, the Japanese ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has decided to start broadcasting in 4k during the finals of the football World Cup in Brazil in July 2014. The first broadcasts will be transmitted via the country’s communication satellites rather than via the direct broadcast satellites. However, usage of BS satellites is planned at a later stage. • Samsung is ready to launch its 85 inch UHDTV across Europe shortly, and it should be in the UK and available to buy this spring. The massive television, the S9, is Ultra High-Definition (UHD), otherwise known as 4K – basically, it’s like strapping four standard HD screens together to get quadruple the resolution. And the price tag for this 85 inch behemoth is predictably eye watering, although thus far Samsung has only announced the European price – which is 40,000 Euros, according to the Telegraph. That’s equivalent to £34,000, making it even more expensive than the likes of LG’s 84 inch 4K set which we recently noted was £22,500. More.

    • LED and LCD TV manufacturer Westinghouse Digital is introducing a range of next-generation U-HDTVs (Ultra High Definition) including a 110 inch model at the upcoming home electronics exhibition CES 2013 in Las Vegas 8th -11th January. Westinghouse says the new models will combine the best of what’s achievable in today’s most cutting-edge display technologies, with Westinghouse’s value and performance, and will set a new standard for accessible high-end functionality in home theatre reproduction. CRIT is the Turin-based research centre run by Italy’s public service broadcaster Rai (one of the few in the world with this type of in-house facility). Director Alberto Morello gave us an insight on the facility’s work on an issue attracting increasing attention on behalf of the general public and mass media – the future of 3DTV and the possibility of domestic no-glasses viewing of 3D content, announced by some as being just around the corner. More.

Broadcasters have further work to complete on Ultra High Definition Television before it can enter the broadcast mainstream, according to the EBU’s head of media fundamentals & production. Speaking at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference in Hollywood Hans Hoffmann said the interfaces needed for programme production and for connections in domestic equipment both needed attention. The new family of compression technologies, HEVC will be published shortly, but much testing remains to be done. More.

Acclaimed movie director James Cameron admitted he was amazed by the quality of 3D-TV displayed at IBC. Speaking at a demo on the Dolby booth of the Dolby/Philips 3D joint-venture (which uses Dutch company Dimenco’s technology), he said “There is room for improvement but this already good enough for the consumer market, you guys are the first to blow out the door”. More.
    * * *
Researchers in South Korea have developed new technology that could enable 3D television and cinema to be viewed without glasses. The team, from Seoul National University, created a slatted barrier that is placed on the screen itself and creates the illusion of depth in the viewer’s perception. Previous attempts at making glasses-free 3D TV have made use of a similar technology, but they required the screen to be viewed from a certain angle. More.

According to Shopping Telly.com, the executives of Home Retail Group, propose the closure of Argos TV.

    http://forum.shoppingtelly.com/forum/showthread.php?39984-Executives-Propose-the-Closure-of-Argos-TV

Originally HRG used facilities provided by JML Direct when it first launched, so not sure if JML still own the Sky EPG slot or Argos eventually bought it out.

I know HRG are looking to close a few Argos and Homebase stores, so makes sense Argos TV closes.

As mentioned above this is a story from 2008 and never happened. Freesat (from BBC and ITV) launched in 2008.

Do you have a link to this?? I always thought Sky would cease FSFS as a service after DSO and now considering the small number of FTV services it's not really economical - will also avoid confusion with the BBC/ITV Freesat service.

I suspect expired subs cards will still continue to open FTV channels so in effect those who have subscribed and no longer do will still be able to view the small selection of FTV channels. If Sky do another card swap in future then I guess that's a different ballgame as people will no longer be able to specifically obtain FTV cards.

That said, Sky may not have 'closed' Freesat from Sky.... but good luck to a new customer that wants to take the service. It's all but invisible in the range of Sky "products". It sits inside the "Shop " on the Sky.com website, but doesn't appear to have any internal link on the website.

So a prospective buyer of FSFS has to already know it exists, and then work hard to find out how to get it... and then, doubtless, do battle with the Sky sales agent who will be upselling you like crazy, with a tempting offer of a few months' free Sky basic pack, "which of course you can cancel if you don't want to continue with it" [provided you remember to cancel in time]... "Oh, and while you're on, can I tempt you with our broadband or phone offers...."

It seems FSFS can ONLY be ordered by phone... clever marketing guys, these Sky people...

    It's here, by the way...

broadcastnow.co.uk is reporting that Discovery's lifestyle channel TLC could make its UK debut as early as April. Discovery has a current internal deadline of late April / early May but subject to agreeing carriage terms with BSkyB.

Any expired subscription cards automatically become Freesat From Sky cards. I imagine most FSFS users use an expired card rather than a £25 FSFS card.

Yup... The FSFS offering was originally a bit of a sop to Government by Sky from the early days of Digital Switchover... and in particular for people who only wanted continuity of the 5 analogue terrestrial channels.

Government even subsidised the FSFS charge for pensioners and those on benefits... so Sky had a subsidised "in" to a whole new market.

...and now we're soon to go through the whole thing again, with frequencies to be used for 4G mobile causing interference to Freeview reception, so forcing the need for a solution to those whose Freeview boxes are soon going to be unable to receive properly. Consumers will either need to replace the Freeview box, or once again consider going satellite, with FSFS being a base option.

Interesting that throughout the whole DSO exercise, satellite has remained as the most stable (and cost-effective) distribution mechanism. (But of course, for various reasons, satellite isn't an option for everyone).

The real disgrace in all this "move to digital" is the vast number of people who replaced their TV sets, in the belief that this was essential in order to continue to watch what is now "digital" TV.... when in reality, all they needed was the right set-top box (and aerial/dish), and their original set would continue to work fine.

Surely Freesat is the base option.

Yep, 12607V. Showcase 2 also has the correct AFD setting now (4:3) as previously it's programming, despite being fullscreen, has always been in stretch-o-vision with the AFD incorrectly set to 16:9.

Well, Viewers get more easily accessed channels on the Sky option, but they have to stand firm against the upselling pressure.

I've had to advise a lot of people on this, and Sky does have the advantage of an easier and more consistent deal re box and dish installation etc, as well as more channels. Freesat has a whole pile of options, but for the "simple" consumer, it's a bewildering array of decisions.

For an OAP (the typical "base" requirement??), much as it grieves me to do so, I'd tell them to go with Sky, but just say NO and NO again to every attempt to persuade them to take anything other than basic FSFS... however tempting the "free" extras might appear.

I see Sky are keeping up with the times, their page for Freesat from Sky has a few channel logos showing what's available, including the old ITV 1 logo and, oh, what's that, Men & Motors? Cool!

There really isn't any need to have a FTV system any more. The channels that are FTV should either go fully subscription on Sky or drop encryption and go FTA. If anything, it'll help add some new content to Freesat. Pick TV and Challenge dropped the FTV status and joined Freesat, hopefully VIVA and Channel 5 HD do at some point too.

You can't even record stuff with a Sky box unless you pay a monthly fee. You also barely get any more channels with FSFS over Freesat (Channel 5 HD being the only notable one). Lastly, surely an EPG filled with channels you can't get is pretty confusing. Freesat is surely a superior "base" option. If someone actually wants Sky they get a free box and installation anyway so having a Sky box already isn't an advantage.

I also don't understand how Freesat has requires a "bewildering array of decisions". You just have to pick a box. Stores do satellite + installation deals just like Sky does.

    More on TLC UK launch.

    http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/broadcasters/discoverys-tlc-set-for-long-awaited-uk-launch/5052015.article?blocktitle=LATEST-NEWS&contentID=870

Lifestyle channel TLC could make its long-awaited UK debut as early as April, with parent company Discovery moving into the final phase of its launch.

Discovery’s latest internal deadline for the channel, which has been in the planning stages for close to two years, is between late April and early May, although sources close to the company suggest this will depend on whether it can reach a carriage agreement with pay-TV platform BSkyB.

The channel has a raft of content from its US sister network available to it, including high-profile lifestyle series, such as Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, as well as series ordered by Discovery Networks International. The result is that it should have no problem filling out its launch schedule.

However, Discovery is keen to strike a deal soon so that its initial tranche of international TLC commissions remain fresh.

It ordered a number of Betty-produced series last year, including Holly Valance-fronted fashion format Ultimate Shopper and travel and culinary format Taste Off.

They were commissioned from the nascent London-based global production hub, which is run by Discovery Networks International head of production and development Julian Bellamy and overseen by Luis Silberwasser, chief content officer and executive vice-president.

Both series have launched across TLC’s international channels and the intention was that they would land on TLC UK as soon as it debuts.

The company is planning to launch original local commissions for the channel, although it is expected that this will come further down the line - executives are talking to indie producers about series orders for 2014.

There is still confusion in the indie community over whether ideas that have been pitched could end up on one of Discovery’s other channels, such as Discovery Real Time, if the company misses its deadline.

TLC UK is being shepherded by Discovery Networks UK and Ireland general manager Susanna Dinnage alongside Dan Korn, senior vice-president at Discovery Western Europe.

The question is though will TLC be a brand new channel or will it just be a rebrand of an existing Discovery owned channel already on the EPG?
