oh your poor mum......how soon are they going to operate?
23rd September.

It does sound like swimming and dance could be victims of cutbacks though.

And I must emphasise, I don't actually agree with any of this, to me the child should come first.... But as I've only just realised.....An Academy school is nothing at all to do with the LEA, or any part of the Local council. Academies are funded directly from the govt, which is why teachers working within them, have to have a completely new contract etc...

At the moment most LEAs, will subsidise places like swimming pools from their education and other budgets. But for Academies, the money is taken away from the LEA and given directly to the schools. So if an Academy want to use a local swimming pool, The council will charge them directly. To make up for the fact that money used to come to them from the govt for things like this, but that budget has been cut. Im not sure that some of the headteachers and supporters of Academies realise how much LEAs actually do for the schools in their areas.... Im sure in theory they have the money to pay for this....but...its not a limitless pot.

and then of course there is the on going costs of employing a swimming teacher, most of whom will be employed directly by the LEA... and the cost of sending staff with the children to the swimming pool etc....and also transport costs...and the time lost travelling to and from the swimming pool ...

A secondary school near us, was meant to be a specialist in performing arts, but when they became an Academy recently, they lost all their funding for performance arts, so all the specialist teachers left or lost their jobs. Which was hard on my friends daughter who mid way through her GCSEs had to lose her dance option.
maybe Laura's school has lost some or all of their dance teachers? In our area, the LEA used to fund the peripatetic dance and music teachers, who would then go into LEA schools. This service has been cut back considerably. AND if the school has become an Academy, funded directly from the govt, this wouldn't be a service the school automatically receives, The Academy will have to buy in their own specialist dance and music teachers.

Then the argument would probably be that therapeutic sessions should be paid for by the NHS budget and not out of the education budget.

Also Im not sure how it works in special schools, but in mainstream schools there is a massive drive to using LSAs (learning support assistants or teaching assistants) in as productive a way as possible, usually to support the more traditional 3 'R's kind of teaching.

So to me this is unfortunately more about cutbacks than anything else...

why did the school become an Academy in the first place?
Special schools still have to follow National Curriculum, as do Academies as far as I know. Swimming is a compulsory part of the national curriculum according to the government http://education.gov.uk/popularquest...05562/swimming "Swimming is a compulsory part of the current national curriculum for PE and will remain a compulsory part of the new curriculum when it is released."

Dancing wasn't really dancing, it's a music and movement therapy and wasn't just for Laura http://www.sherbornemovementuk.org/a...-movement.html

Her teacher has told me they will be re-arranging for this to start again, it's just not been sorted yet. As for the swimming, she said they can arrange for Laura to have use of the hydro pool once a week. It really is the only exercise she can do that doesn't involve her feet... doesn't hurt in other words.

I have also written to the Head to ask about the swimming, L's school does have to follow the National Curriculum (they have to do French, etc... they do all the alloted hours in project weeks to get around it, so they learn not just some French but about France, etc. so it covers several topics - geography, language, etc.). With regard to the cost, transport and use of the sports centre swimming pool is free for special needs, the teachers/TA's were the swimming teachers/therapists and transport is the school's. Time taken to/from applies to anything they do outside of school, such as the gardening project

Ali,massive hugs, and sorry about your mum, hopefully everything ned up just fine at the end.x

Hope everyone is doing terrific.x
Ali so sorry will have my fingers and toes crossed for your mum

Mum's got to go for an operation to have the mass in her stomach removed, they will also remove the ovaries, womb and appendix! Talk about a clear-out, she'll be 2 stone lighter! Dad will obviously have to go into care for the duration
Hi Ali God you are having a rough month, don't know how you cope with it all. I hope everything goes well for your mother. By the sounds of things she will have to have a lot of help after the op

Thought you weren't going to touch X Factor with a barge pole

They just seem a much more relaxed panel with Sharon there.

Well, I swore I'd never watch it again. I don't think I'll go out of my way. If anything else is on, that will take priority.

Where's David Cameron when you need him?

I love it in spite of all that blessed flag waving. Love the music.
Mind you, that mezzo soprano - couldn't understand a word she sang - she wouldn't get through the X Factor auditions!

Just reading in the Guardian about some male conductors, Russian ones , saying that there some things women can't do - conduct and throw balls. What a load of ;jalfhaiosuh;oeutrqwhad!

Some men can't bear it when women manage to do things better than they do!

Hi all, hope everybody's well.

Laura's first week back at Gateway, so a nice long day. Gives me a chance to spend some quality time with Mum. Eye test first though, best get cracking ... I take them very seriously as glaucoma has affected two generations in my family now (my Grandma and my Dad) so I make sure I don't miss those checks!

Whoever asked... yes I am watching CBB, but it's hard to get into after being so involved in the civilian series, a break would have been nice!

As long as Carol or Lauren don't win!
