Interesting news in the football world. Thomas Hitzlsperger has announced to the German press that he is gay. He had to retire from football due to persistent injuries, but is the highest profile footballer to come out, having been capped for Germany at international level.

As great as it is that a footballer as high profile as him has come out, he still did it post-retirement. That's not a criticism of him, he'd be stupid to do it while he was still playing, but the fact is that most sportspeople, footballers in particular, only come out when their career is over.

Still, it's a big step forward for him and the discussion of homosexuality in football.

Yeah good news to have such a high profile player, and but the sound of it quite well received news not just here but also in Germany.

As for active/retired issue, well the fact that he's another footballer to come out is still a big step. The fact that he's only just retired is not an issue for me.

Anton Hysen told 5Live that even he had some negative comments from other players and fans in Sweden (as well as other European clubs not wanting him due to his sexuality), it seems like there's still a long way to go in many pro-sports. Just chipping away, one by one.

To be fair he's done an interview for radio 4 where he said he wasn't sure how people would react if had come out while playing and he wanted his football to be the focus and not his sexuality. The tabloid style press would never have let him be, so I understand why he waited.

That does seem a decent reason. I get a little uneasy when I see such sarcastic comments as: "he waited until he retired. wot a hero"

Surely its better for any player to come out rather than not at all, and so at the moment it doesn't matter that he's no longer on an active roster.

And people seem to always focus on the end of careers, but seem to forget that players like Hitzlsperger will inspire the younger generation as well, and so it won't be that long before there's an open player in the lower leagues just starting out his career.

I totally agree with this, and I wasn't criticising him before for coming out after retirement, I totally understand. Any footballer, especially a Premier League one, who comes out while still playing, will from that day on be 'the gay footballer'. Most capped for England? 'The gay footballer has the most caps . . .'. Scored the winning World Cup goal for England, making English football history in the process? 'The gay footballer scored the winning goal . . . '. It would just overshadow their entire career. Hell, they do that with popstars, and homosexuality in music is no big deal, not in comparison to football.

The tabloids criticise and say it's a shame no footballer has come out, but the way they'd treat it is one of the reasons why.

I'm bouncing along thinking that I'm making progress towards that closet door and then some little twerp makes a dumb comment and it knocks the wind right out of my sails.

Don't let some little twerp stop you being you, and doing what you want.

I was told "here's your magazine" - it was one of those fitness ones. I assume he was implying that I'd like looking at the pictures.

And thanks, I'm slowly getting over it, but its the first of "those moments" I've had in probably 6 years.. so it took me a bit by surprise.

Who and where was this? In a shop or something?

The thing to remember is, you say it's the first time it's happened to you in 6 years. That means that for 6 years, no one you've met would make, nor has made, a comment like that. In those 6 years everyone you've met has been nice (I assume). Why focus on the one negative moment out of 6 whole years of moments?

So are you not out then? Don't let one bad comment stop you if it's what you want to do, especially if no one else you know has made comments like that. Their opinions are the ones that matter

Did you ask for the magazine?

You shouldn't let people's comments bother you, it shows them up for what they are, not you.

Why wouldn't you like looking at the pictures some of the men in those pictures are superhot.

The break room at work.

I should add that in hindsight it was probably just a 'bit of fun' and I'm taking it way to seriously.

Maybe it wasn't to do with the pictures and he was telling me I'm a fat bugger...

Well that is true. I have had the odd comment but nothing in the negative, which is how I perceived this one. (When the sidekick in the background laugh you kind of guess.)

Looking back I don't know why this one rubbed me up the wrong way, but it just did. I guess it was because I thought these people were above such childish behavior.

So are you not out then? Don't let one bad comment stop you if it's what you want to do, especially if no one else you know has made comments like that. Their opinions are the ones that matter
Nope, still in.. I like the analogy that I'm no longer in Narnia, but closer to the fur coats. (*whispers* it smells like mothballs!)

And thanks, I know I shouldn't let it stop me, but I was on a positive-step-out-that-door kind of New Year high, that it did make me step back a bit.

I know this is all trivial really, but I just thought this was the best place to vent. And I thank you all for the kind words.

Nah, didn't ask for it, it was just left on the side and they found it and thought it'd be a hoot to shove it under my nose.

As for showing them up, well I guess that is very true. They are the ones that seem to be focusing on it. What is it with straight guys that sometimes are a bit obsessive with "them gayz" (generally speaking now.)

You need to learn to be more sassy.
Oh snap!
*waves fingers in a Z*

I just said "I don't get it" ... yeah real smooth.. [insert roll eyes smilie here]

Why wouldn't you like looking at the pictures some of the men in those pictures are superhot.
hahaha yeah some are, but some are a bit 'gah' - the ones that do those Mr Muscle competitions with the veins all popping out. *shudder*

I like that. I'll be using that I'm not 'out' either, but I'm at the point where I'm not denying it when people mention it, and not correcting people if they say so. I kind of just leave it out there. I don't stop people thinking it.

You can always vent here hon And yeah, I get that comments like that are a downer, but knobheads like that aren't important. Is it just being out at work, or generally? Does anyone know? Either way, don't let others like that get to you 'Those that matter don't care, and those that care don't matter' as they say

That sounds like a good way to me.

Generally. I'm technically only 'out' on DS (and the other forum I frequent) - a few online friends know but that's it.

And I love that quote. Sort of like "A mind over matter. I don't mind and you don't matter"
