Yeah I'd wager most of them know how to spell sophisticated.
Also just as an FYI I know it might be cool to drop shows like Breaking Bad and Boardwalk Empire into conversation but something you should consider when making this argument about what audiences want (particular mass/casual audiences) - Breaking Bad didn't become a commercial success until the end of its run and Boardwalk Empire never became a commercial success. What audiences have actually watched in large number are shows like Empire, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Scandal and The Blacklist. Personally I would struggle to use the word sophisticated to describe any of those but maybe that's just me.
