Vince Russo has publicly put out an invitation for Dixie to go on his Swerve podcast although no one really thinks she will do it. Even Russo's own son called her an idiot last week on it as he also worked for TNA as a production assistant.
I think one of the things that really stands out about Russo is he seems to enjoy life, a lot of times you see wrestlers and management and they are very wooden, they really do come across as knuckleheads that have no grasp on reality or really any kind of real life interests. I think Russo mentioned that himself once that a lot of people in the business hated him because they wished they were more like him in that he didn't take it so seriously, he would openly talk about wrestling being fake and scripted and that it's nothing more than a television show and he likes movies and comic books and music and he watches other TV shows and he has a social life with his family and they are all stuck in this wrestling bubble and they can't do anything outside it.
I think if Russo has any kind of edge of other writers it is those things. He likes to laugh and joke around too and he says he always pointed out flaws in storylines in every company he worked for. That is the kind of person you want helping to write your show because you need someone that watches TV shows, that knows what music is current, that has their finger on pop culture, that knows what people are watching. If they're not watching fake fighting, what are they watching? THe wrestlers and bookers today probably dont watch TV or listen to chart music or know what's going on in the world. It's maybe been years since they walked into a supermarket even, many of the top stars will live in gated communities, they wont mingle with the public or regular people, they wont have any grasp on the real world.
That's what Russo was always good at. Making the regular people watching regular TV tune into wrestling because the fact is, no one apart from children and adults fans who can't let go or grow out of it cares about fake fighting. Fake wrestling. You need to give them a reason to care. Even Vince McMcMahon said it this week, people tune in then they go to football, then they switch back, even Vince knows no one is sitting for 3 hours watching wrestling.

FMKK you need to remember wrestling is fake. It's like Vince said he had to scream in Christopher Daniels face every week, NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR FAKE MATCHES! He didn't mind telling the wrestlers to their faces the truth.

I don't see how any of that is relevant to what I just posted, nor does it have much connection to reality.
Well the reality is people don't care about wrestling, that's what it comes down to and they wont care about wrestling unless you give them good reason to.
Well people won't care about anything unless they're given a reason to. That's simply a truism. And I agree with you that there's a need for characters and stories to drive interest. But the best way to do that is with logical stories that culminate in quality wrestling matches. People care about wrestling presented well.
I mean, did people really care about wizards before Harry Potter? Not really, the characters and story drew people in, but people also became engrossed in the trappings of the fantasy world they inhabited too. You can make people interested in wrestling by doing it well.

So the only way wrestling can be successful is by doing poor imitations of already popular TV shows? (That is assuming that we even take those characters/angles to have been successful.)
I disagree. Wrestling is most successful when it has stars that people want to see. WWE and TNA have been exceptionally poor at building stars in recent years. It's fine to try and capture trends that are in the popular zeitgeist of course, but simply lifting gimmicks from other shows is not the way to go in my opinion.
And I also doubt that a middle aged born-again Christian who spends most of his time going back over stuff he was doing in the late nineties is really that in touch with popular culture. Maybe not as insular as McMahon, but that's hardly high praise.
Not every character has to be lifted from other shows but there is no harm in borrowing ideas. Of course real personalitys have to come through but for many wrestlers.......there's really no real personality there.
Vince Russo says many times that he could write a show like the Attitude Era and it would draw terribly because the world has moved on. He said plans for after the Attitude Era should have been made in 2000/2001 because the audience couldn't be sustained and his idea for the next level was to do programming showing behind the scenes at WWE and letting people see what goes on day to day before a show, during it and afterwards from the management side to the wrestling side and through those segments the matches would be made for the show that night or stipulations made and people would see them in a more realistic way. I don't know if that would have worked or not but that was his idea for after the Attitude Era.
I was actually surprised to hear him swear as much as he does and he likes hot women and he loves the male vs female aspect of Lucha Underground and it makes you realise what a born again Christian really is. He says himself the only difference is that he believes in God. It's not like you're not allowed to like sex or violence or use bad words, it just means every day you say sorry and try and be a better person. There's very little difference from modern day Russo and the late 90's Russo. He was all for the AJ/Paige Lesbian angle, he's all for sexuality and violence. I think people see wrestlers like Shawn Michaels who's really the most famous born again Christian wrestler and they think that must be part of the rules, you don't say bad things or say anything negative and it's really not true.

I don't think that too much wrestling is the reason for the lack of characters though - it's because WWE script them all too heavily so that real personalities can't shine through. They don't want people to get over.

Good for Mark winning Boot Camp but what the hell was Dixie doing she put them all down and listed why she shouldn't bother with them before announcing the winner.

Well you would hope wrestling promoters would have learned their lesson by now.
I think wrestling companies are just getting by and no more. Just making a profit, just paying bills, there's no passion for wrestling anymore because the people that had the passion for it went to MMA or just left it alone, the last 10 years of the wrestling business has been terrible, many people just got sick and tired of it and who can blame them.
