I think what a large number of people want is to 'be different' from the person next to them. iPhone hit a point where it was so common it became unfashionable and the same could well happen to the S3. Fashions and tech can be quite fickle. It something great comes along it doesnt take much for the tide to shift. The Nexus 4 has been a good example - a decent price point has made it sell well.

I think Google/Motorola's upcoming project is one to watch. Android has not a reached saturation point yet either as iOS is still holding its own for now. 2013 is going to be a big year for Google and Android at the expense of others.

My S2 locks up about twice a week, as does everybody else's in my firm. Good job it's got a removable battery

My S2 has never locked up during usage in 18 months.

However it has occasionally failed to scan the SD card when booting up which required a reboot to resolve.

I imagine it comes down to personal preference.

OLED is better for deep blacks, but unless you use apps (or maybe watch movies) on your phone where deep blacks feature much, I think I'd go for brightness and colour saturation over deep blacks.

I don't believe for a second that "barely anyone used one hand to use a phone."

Um what? Go on - have a go at a constructive sentence.

I bet there are more than a few other CEO's who would rather like to be in the "desperate" position of -

1. Having turned in the biggest profit last quarter of any company in history
2. For the first time last quarter being the number one handset (not just smartphone) supplier in the States

Yes, Apple are in a desperate situation

There are of course many benefits of amoled in addition to blacks but strange because colour saturation is the reason I think amoled is far better

What is the number one mobile OS? Is it not Android? Android is also making its way into the living room console market.

Do iOS users not use apps any more? Wasn't that the biggest selling point apart from it being a flowery adjective?

Also deep blacks and bright colours is a pretty good winner for anyone unless they are going to be doing photo/movie editing i would have thought. And who the hell would do that on a mobile?

Oh for gods sake. People aren't talking about the company going bust!

They are talking about having not innovated for YEARS now! Which is terrible for "TECH" company, who just litigate and say the competition is crap.

No need to be confused.

I didn't say use apps, I said use apps where deep blacks feature much.

I don't think you'd need to be doing movie / photo editing to have a preference regarding a screen's colour reproduction.

I like vivid colours. The iphone 4 and 4s was awful. The 5 isnt to bad. However, it does not have the best screen. I prefer my N4 screen over the 5.

you couldn't make it up ..... although apple by all accounts have been trying to get amoled for a while with some difficulty which is why I think Timothy was a little bit pissed off the other day.

Of course when they do get an oled screen and release it, it will be the new "cornea" screen and the best screen ever made and loved with devotion by all who see such beauty.

The problem with the type of debate on this thread is that it is always difficult to know who speaks with the most authority.

Is it a person who has worked his way up to become CEO of one of the worlds biggest technology companies, or is it the FMs?

What a strange comment.

The media, especially blogs and podcasts dont seem to have picked his comment up too well do they?

They mean a lot more than some CEO imo.

You might say that if everything has to be black or white. At the moment OLED has pros and cons. Why couldn't you make it up that Apple would want to R&D OLED with the possible aim of leveraging its advantages and maybe reducing or eliminating the disadvantages.

And can you give the sarcastic hyperbole rest, just for once.

It's really wearing thin.

Although you could also debate that "the guy whose job and company shares depends on him bigging his own product up" might not give the most unbiased view

Another thread just turning into opinions. I happen to prefer my Gnex screen over the kids N4s screen but there is no science to that. Its just like saying i prefer jam to marmalade.

Some like vivd colours, others prefer less so. Its a silly argument to try and state someones opinion is "more right" than someone elses.

I think we should just make an apple vs android sticky thread, because most threads in the gadgets forums these days seem to descend into that anyway

You see what you want to believe. I could say the contrary and it would just be my word against yours. Hardly scientific.

Could I ask you this serious question though... how many hands do you use when you actually use your phone as phone and place it to your ear? We're looking at the most common use for a phone, nothing else.

Obviously its the CEO in this case. Unless its a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing.

Its a bit daft making these comments when he's just hired a leading OLED scientist.

I think a lot of other posts on this thread are also strange too, but i've been at work all day when this kicked off.

When i started reading it when i got home i did actually mean to post that but then ended up directing replies to specific posts.
