That's interesting, because reviews I've seen of android wear makes it sound like a complete dog.

Same goes for many watches, phones, bits of technology. Its not the parts price that determines the value of the product, thats down to what the manufacturers think the market will bear, which Apple tend to be quite good at doing.”

Not sure I agree there. Usually with Apple products, once the tear downs come in and experts estimate the component cost, the selling prices are usually linearly related to the component costs - albeit with a healthy Apple margin of course. On past experience I would be surprised if the component cost was significantly less than £100 for a £339 product.

The price definitely isn't linear on Apple kit, especially when you consider the increase in price for additional storage. There will be a gigantic markup on the Apple Watch, but they do spend more on R&D than most other companies out there.

Tried both sizes on yesterday. They are very nice. It's really handy the way you can just turn the dial and you can zoom in and out to click on the text icon or any other icon.

What reviews are these? Early reviews, or more recent ones?

Difference is, i don't ever pay attention to reviews sites. I go with my own experience on things. I find that's vastly better than relying on someone else's normally skewed view.

Perhaps "linear" was the wrong term. What I meant was that there is a correlation. The selling price is not plucked out of the air. The prices have to be not ridiculously more expensive than the competition (by ridiculous I probably mean more than double, but don't start quoting me counter examples). So, to a degree the price is set by the competition who usually engage in a race to the bottom.

I'll look them up if you really want me to, but many criticised the way apps were selected and launched (described as long winded). Has that changed?

As for you only going with your experience. You made many comments criticising the apple watch UI way before you went on Sunday, so I'm not sure where you got your experience from.

I really need to find time to go and have a look. There are some very conflicting views on here.

The leather straps seem to fit on the wrist better and made the larger watch feel less bulky. Well it did for me anyway compared to the metal straps. It kept vibrating on my wrist which could get rather annoying after a while but you can turn all these notifications off. Shame you still need to have the phone with you in order for the GPS to work.

I think the guy said there was 4gb of memory on the watch so you can't store all your music but 4gb is enough for me to store the songs I want to play when at the gym or out and about without the need to carry the phone with me all the time.

Android Wear is really snappy. I just wish it gave voice feedback.

They want you to buy the watch also, not to replace your phone, thus very limited standalone functionality.

I think it's simpler than that. Tech just isn't there yet to have a credible standalone smartwatch. It would be slow and battery life would be even more crippling.

You can download maps and directions now but just not GPS. The guy said they were working on it.

If you buy an exclusive one in a thousand print and pay good money. The cost is in the marketing.

Other smartwatches, still reasonably cheap to make, but with newer high end type screens also have the cost of low production runs.
Here, with a captive market, low sales will still in the millions so mass production means it should have the lowest cost in the business.

Your high end, more flattering, £170 stainless steel £150 or so Moto 360, the LG R or the always on Sony 3 likely have associated costs triple that of the iWatch.

Its certainly these watches that relate to the high end watch business far more, yet being in the fast changing electronic biz are unlikely to be any investment to an avid watch buyer, not that many watches have ever been a proper investment.

What I find fascinating is that I am noticing far more watches being worn. Men maybe prefer very big chunky ones whilst women go towards ultra small ones. All are round, I've yet to see anyone wearing a square one.

My wife only owns 3 watches. 2 are Cartier and both are rectangle.

However, it is a nonsense argument. If smartwatchs were only designed to tell the time on a round face, you might have a point, but they are not.

Almost every other application for a smartwatch makes no sense on a round screen.

The moto 360 with its 'not quite round screen' is the ultimate compromise.

There is a nice article here on the costs of the Galaxy 6 Edge versus the iPhone 6.

Spoiler
Galaxy 6 Edge 64GB - $290

I was in Regent Street today and got my first proper play with the watch. I actually pre-ordered one on Friday sight unseen - and before I get derided for that, I had no choice (), I'm firmly in the Apple Ecosystem and I have to have the latest toys no matter who produces them. However, I must say I was pretty impressed by the UI. I really don't know what all this talk of unintuitive and difficult to use is about. To someone who has an iPhone (the only market for this device) it takes about 30 seconds to master it. Time will tell, but I think they've come up with the right combination of touch and physical buttons.
