Why would you need a heart rate monitor belt? If working out with weights, the Watch would measure your heart rate, how much 'arm' movement you are doing, and time your workout. Seems OK to me.

I'm the only person I know with an Apple Watch, which does feel a bit odd.

The Microsoft band works with the iPhone. A quick Google search reveals others:

Yeah I also don't know anyone else with an apple watch besides myself.

Optical HRMs are not accurate when doing weights. Documented fact, as accepted by Apple themselves. It is not accurate when rowing, or when cycling. Overall it isn't a great workout aid - you definitely can't use it for target HR training, which is one of the best ways to improve performance.

The only time it will be accurate is if you aren't pushing yourself ....

Interesting. I've never heard of 'target HR training', so maybe I'm not in the demographic for that type of fitness device. I feel I get pretty good HR data when running, and I'm not concerned if it is 'accurate' as long as it's consistent between sessions.

It'll depend on what you're training for; opticals tend to be okay when running (at any sort of speed), reasonably accurate. But when weight training you may as well be using a random number generator, it won't be in the slightest bit consistent ... But I must give credit to Apple for supporting an external HRM on the watch, they're the only manufacturer to do it.

(incidentally, my training is fairly specific of late - was on a team that set a endurance world record on indoor rowers, and now training for another distance based team record, it mildly uncomfortable)

Sounds like you are readng the usual peddled msinformation on Android Wear. BT works on the £120 or more always on GPS enabled Smartwatch 3.

A BT strap HRM is both lower power and more accurate than using optical on a watch.

I've just downloaded iOS 9 beta 2 on my iPhone. Is the Apple Watch OS 2 beta available to download yet ?

I've been running the Watch OS 2 beta since June - it's only available to developers

I see. Shame cause I was hoping I could download it to make email and text notifications better as I never seem to get mine for ages or not at all. Weird how they've released iOS 9 to non developers and not OS 2 beta.

This is the first time iOS has been released to non devs. It's a complicated way of getting the beta of Watch OS on the watch

I was charging the phone earlier and suddenly the OS 2 beta 4 was available to download onto the watch. Took quite a while, nearly an hour but it's finally on there. The watch is much faster now and my email and text notifications are finally working. They even appear on the watch before my phone and Mac now. The new cityscapes faces are great also as they change from night to day.

Whilst denying collapsing sales, Apple have seemingly reversed their exclusive boutique plans, instead adding BestBuy as an exclusive sales outlet for 100 or so stores starting on 5 weeks time.

I'd say that Bestbuy is the 'Asda/Walmart of electronics'.
So, will it end up at Currys or John Lewis? Currys I imagine.

How did you manage that? I've got iOS 9 on the phone but the watch refuses to update to Watch OS 2.0 even though I've installed the beta watch profile. I thought it was only available to those with legit developer accounts or have a UUID registered with another developer?

I have no idea. It just appeared when I started charging it yesterday. I thought it was something to do with updating the iOS 9 beta profile on the watch. It works so much better now with notifications. They never worked properly before. Plus it works with WiFi calling now also.

Not 5 weeks, only a week or so.

So did the beta turn on sleep tracking, a feature I'm sure we were told it had?

There is a nightstand mode on it now which operates when you are charging the phone overnight. You turn the watch sideways and it shows the time and you can set an alarm to wake you up. It's a shame it doesn't work without the charger as I don't need to charge my watch every night. Also the default setting for music still chooses the phone as the source instead of the watch which is annoying.

Who told you it had sleep tracking?

Same person who told him Apple would only be selling the Watch in "exclusive boutiques".

It was rumoured to link to the similarly hyped healthkit.
The resulting need to charge the watch twice per day will have put paid to that., but if there are improvements to battery life then, why not ?

Contrastingly the new Moov, a useful bit of health kit claims 6 months battery life.

There is no need to charge the watch twice a day.

So you've gone from 'I'm sure we were told' to 'it was rumoured' in a single post.

Good to see nothing has changed.

Agreed. I've never yet been in a situation where the battery has run out during the day. It easily lasts as long as the phone.

Most evenings when I put the watch on charge it is sat at around 60-75% charge remaining. Can't recall it actually getting below 50% so far, so I could get away with charging every two days if I so wished, but it is just routine for me now to put it on its charging stand when I put my phone in its charge dock too.
