The red button menu now has "Red Button 1" and "Red Button 2" on it alongside "Red Button HD".

And, fairly impressively, "Red Button HD" only appears on 302 if is being viewed on an HD receiver.

And if 302 is not present 'Red Button 2" doesn't show up on the menu .

From SD BBC1 and 2 there's only "Wimbledon Extra Court", no way to get to 302 though the menus.

BBC1 SD, BBC2, SD and 301 have one menu system, BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, 302 and 303 have another.
You can get to 301 from the HD menus but not back again.

And there's no indication for the menus of what is on each channel - but that'll be cost cutting.

It wouldn't be appropriate to develop something that sophisticated when the channels are only going to be available for a short period of time.

Ah, it's changed now. Better but a bit confusing.

What is 308? The EPG just says "This is 308" all day and the display says to retune if you see the message when tuned to 302.

Well BBC has two SD red button channels 301 and 302. 302 uses a different multiplex so freeview light areas will not be able to pick it up. 303 is the HD red button channel it usually shows what is on SD 301 but in HD. (only HD receivers will pick up this channel). If you get 308 on 302 it means you have not rescanned your box to get the real 302 red button service.
Yesterday afternoon the BBC was showing 4 Wimbledon tennis matches BBC1-2 301 and 302.
An interesting thing happen yesterday was that a message came up on 301 saying it was going to reboot so I needed to exit 301. (from BBC not my box).

That's right, 302 used to be on the BBC A mux alongside 301, but this 302 service was renamed 308 (and has no video/audio stream). The current 302 service is on the Arq A mux.

That is the sole reason for the existence of 308, a retune message.

Which is what I see when I tune to 302. Given I lose all my future recording schedule if I retune (Humax HDR Fox T2) I don't do it unless I need the results, which in this case I don't.

I used to think that with my Humax PVR9150T, but I now know how to do it without losing anything. Just delete channel 302 then rescan the single MUX that it has moved to. Nothing lost. This probably works on the HDR Fox T2 as well.

I believe that nothing is lost provided you have no recordings scheduled on the channels that move during the retune of the single Mux. Given this is Arq A it's likely I'd be OK.

But given I have no desire to watch 302 I don't see the point. It's going to disappear at the end of summer anyway.

No, the only thing you lose is recordings scheduled on the channel you delete, which in this case is the dead former channel 302, so you lose nothing.

OK well given that I don't need 302 I still don't want to take the risk. But thanks for your advice, it may come in handy for channels that I actually want in the future.

I saw that message.

On the TVOnics DTR HV-250, the Menu prompts from 1 and 2 to 301 work fine, but direct dialling 302 seems to be the surest way of getting sound and vision.

Returning from 302 via the Press Red prompts is also problematic!

See posts on http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showt...436106&page=94 which is the latest Official TVOnics thread page in the Freeview + Recorders general issues subforum.

Just checked 303, the promo loop is on, and it doesn't look like HD.

Do you think this Is this deliberate, because of the football on 1?

No, because the football has been carried on 303 for the past couple of weeks while the other channels ran HD material.

The Olympics last year showed that it's possible to run all 5 HD channels without any problems, and I remember at least on one occasion there were sports running simultaneously on 3 of those channels.

From what I have seen of the promo loop previously, either it has never been in HD, or large parts of it are not HD

I put 303 on today to check if it was showing the tennis in 3D. It was but it didn't look as sharp as I'd expect from a HD source.

Though they were only advertising the finals as being in 3D so maybe it was a sort of test ?

No, they advertised recently that the semis would be 3D too. Remember that broadcast 3D will be lower resolution than HD anyway. I think this is right:

3D Broadcast + Passive 3DTV = 960x540 effective
3D Broadcast + Active 3DTV = 960x1080 effective
3D BD + Passive 3DTV = 1920x540 effective
3D BD + Active 3DTV = 1920x1080

Then there's the issue with interlaced/progressive which I don't quite understand in relation to 3D.

In order to transmit the side-by-side picture needed for 3D, some resolution is lost anyway. So currently HD will always look sharper than 3D.

Anyway, it looks like when the 2-year trial of 3D comes to an end this year, the BBC will put it on a 3-yr hiatus (due to lack of public appetite)
