I can't see the list at #106 being parred down further, though. We must wait for the BBC Trust updating of http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/our_wo...ed_button.html

The BBC Trust's findings and recommendations of the service review of BBC Online and Red Button have now been published:

I am glad to note the review takes notice of the numbers of those who access BBC Red Button but not BBC Online.

Kudos to the Red Button team for making Ken Bruce the alternate commentary on Eurovision: it was high time the choice was given!

Service names have changed at approx 13:00 today:

301 is now "BBC RB 301" - showing a Springwatch feed
302 is now "BBC RB 302" - new MHEG "BBC RED BUTTON Coming Soon"
303 is now "BBC RB 303 HD" - new HD video still image "BBC RED BUTTON HD Coming soon: the best of BBC Red Button in HD"

an LCN for 308 has also appeared with service name "308" - displays MHEG "BBC Red Button".

302 is now coming from the ARQA mux - so I suspect that 308 is a placeholder for the old BBCA version of 302 in order to be able to put up a "please rescan" message at some time in the future.

So hang on, has the BBC reversed its policy of removing all but one of the red button streams then?

Ah, so someone has found a use for that 12th stream on ArqA.

What wonderful picture quality the tennis fans will be getting.

There is capacity for a thirteenth stream on Arq A.

Technically there's capacity for a 50th stream on Arq A. It'll look fantastic on a postage stamp sized screen.

Looking forward to 301 HD and 302 being available for Wimbledon - on satellite they should look great.

Hi Ray Cathode do you have any plans to reopened your website?

So we will have two red button channels then this could also be useful when big sporting events are on.

This whole thing is surprising since only 4 days ago the BBC were defending BBC Red Button's reduction to one video stream on Points of View

So true: the package is also on the updated Clips page http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mysv/clips

The renaming of PSB 1's 301, COM 5's 302, PSB 3's 303 and introduction of 308 are all reflected on http://www.digitaluk.co.uk/industry/...annel_listings.

Maybe it's only a temporary stream for Wimbledon/Glastonbury (especially as the BBC are covering Glasto big-time this year)

Very probably.

As it's on ArqA the BBC will be paying money to Arqiva for this, which given the state of the BBC's finances ......

but its not universally available which may be another factor ...... in the move to all BBC emission on HD.

Certainly looking that way in the Media Centre blurb on Glastonbury

It'd be a real waste to have 303 be only for Glastonbury with Wimbledon coming up.

Anyway, why is 303 on Arq A in the first place? It used to be on BBC A and there's still space for it since there's only 7 streams on there right now. When BBC Parliament closes for the summer there'll only be 6!

You're hinting at something significant here, aren't you technologist, and I'm not sure I'm 100% getting it. You mean we'll get all BBC channels in HD in the 600MHz band, but it won't be universally available?

Cheers,
David.

303 is on BBC B not Arq A.

302 is on Arq A where there is unused capacity.

The Olympics showed how useless the Freeview arrangement was with feeds having to be cut due to "quirks of the digital system" aka lack of "bitrate". As Parliament uses so little bitrate it can't be replaced by a sports or music event feed without the above mentioned problems.

Using spare capacity on a commercial mux for a temporary arrangement makes sense to me to enhance OB coverage. I'm sure they got it cheap as the capacity is vacant. Reminds me of how BBC World Service started.

BTW I think 308 only exists to remind viewers to retune, and won't become a video stream.

BBC Parliament does not normally close though, even if Westminster is in recess it continues to show parliamentary recordings

That is what Arqivas submission to OFCOM Says (but only the publicy owned PSB and the BBC are interested) at 20 to 30 sites 60% population
... but the situation is likely to be temporary as when the 600Mhz band has to be used as 700Mhz is cleared - everyone will be on T2 .
.. or other things will have happened.... for entertainment channels at least
and the same issues apply to BBCOneHD on DSAT- but that is far more likely to be permanent - unless a good LF increase.

But for more red button - being connected is far and away the best answer for all Platforms
