I've only seen Sinister. I found it a bit disappointing; not very scary. However I loved the story anyway so my rating for Sinister would be 7/10.

Saw them both in theatres and TBH was disappointed in both of them.
Insidious kept up its creepy premise but IMO really fell apart at the end, I completely lost interest for the third act. 6/10 Sinister had a better plot and some genuinely effective moments (specifically the found footage segmets.) Again though, like Insidious I feel like more could have been made of it. The demon was certainly a creepy creation and the little time he had on screen was very effective. I think my main problem with it was,
Spoiler
Again I would probably give it a 6/10, nothing special, but entertaining enough. |

Sinister, by far.
It's probably my favourite US horror of the last few years, it has a brilliantly creepy atmosphere and the soundtrack is incredibly unsettling, and even though i usually find "jump scares" to be cheap, here they were used very effectively. The only thing i didn't like was the scene with the ghost children following Ethan Hawke, it would have been better if they'd kept them blurred out in the background rather than showing them in focus so that we can see that they're literally just kids with make up on. Aside from that brief scene though it's a great film. Insidious is good until you actually get a good look at the demon half way through the film, after that it just falls apart and the tension disappears (partly due to the way that it looks like Darth Maul with hilarious little goat feet). Sinister - 8.5/10 Insidious - 6/10 |

Have only seen Insidious, like everyone else said the first half is great but the second half resembles of something like those 90's Goosebumps or Are You Afraid Of The Dark tv shows and ruined the entire thing.

Sinister because it's more consistent than Insidious, which was ruined by its idiotic third act.

Sinister. Absolutely brilliant. Best horror film I've seen in years.
The score for the super 8 movies is deeply unsettling. Then the reveal of who was behind all the videos is equally chilling. I would give Sinister a 10/10/ Insidious, I did enjoy but I felt the 'demon' ruined the story. I wish they would have done more with The Further. It had a bit of humor to it too, but Sinister has the upper hand for genuine scares that last longer. Insidious gets 8/10 for the scares and for using the song Tip Toe Through The Tulips, took two off because of that damn demon. |

Ive only seen Sinister and it was so boring. One of the most boring films I've seen in a long time. The last 15-20 minutes are all right but up to that was just tedious.

Both films started with a lot of promise but in my opinion, neither delivered. In fact, most films of this genre for the last few years can be described this way, yet with the improvement in special fx you'd think there'd be some really top films about to scare us.
Sinister = 7/10 Insidious = 8/10 |

I loved both films although Insidious is my favourite of the two. I've been a horror fan for all of my adult life and no film has ever made me jump as much as that did in the cinema! I agree that the last part isn't as good as the rest of the film but it doesn't manage to spoil it for me...
I'd give Insidious 9/10 and Sinister 8/10 |

I saw Sinister again last night, and actually would upgrade it to a 7/10 from the 6/10 I gave it initially. It's one of those films I think that works better in a more intimate setting. I like that it does present a slightly different tweak on the discovered footage genre. I didn't really care for Insidious. |

Sinister easily; although both are quite jumpy; Insidious becomes ridiculous.
A very good horror film to watch is the possession!! |

Sinister 8/10 - Very creepy, keeps you entertained throughout, last act was decent.
Insidious - 7/10 - Overall starts better than Sinister but the last act killed the entire film for me, could have easily been one of the best horrors. However I think James Wan will redeem himself with Part 2 and his other horror film this year, the guy is a pure genius. |

I thought Insidious was shit - it came across as an extended episode of 'Supernatural'.
Sinister, however, I really liked. Some nice, creepy scenes and it did feel like some old school horror in some places. |

Loved Insidious(saw it with a live Q and A with James Wan and Leigh Whannell) and i thought it was a scary film that made me jump a few times(and hardly anything ever scares me)
Still not seen Sinister yet so i cant comment on that one |

Have not seen Insidious, but watched Sinister last night, thought the first half of the film was good but not scary, let down by a weak and predictable ending, as others have commented the super 8 film parts were effective, and the build up was strong, let down by a weak ending, seems to be the case with most horror films nowadays.

I thought Insidious was rubbish, so very boring but Sinister I kinda thought was ok, Ethan Hawke was quite good as a scummy father and the Super 8 family executions were kinda creepy etc

Insidious was scarier however the last act ruined the film 6/10
Sinister is a brilliant film, not as scary as Insidious, however the ending is genuinely creepy. 9/10 - Sinister |

I found Insidious scarier, it's a really strong horror until the final act when it becomes too cheesy. Sinister is more creepy than scary, the found footage was shocking and disturbing and felt quite realistic. I prefer Insidious overall but Sinister is only let down because it's not as scary.
Insidious 8/10 Sinister 7/10 |

I don't know why some of you are whining about the ending of Sinister. It was perfectly acceptable.
