Strange that briers signed up for a show he didn't like. I dont remember the david renwick series at all but id have expected those two to be comedy gold together. One foot in the grave was also quite bleak and dark too. Geoffrey Palmer was considered as victor wasn't he. Briers would have been an excellent victor too I think.

I have the DVD. I think it's quite astonishing - it's as though it completely undermines the whole world Briers had once embodied, which by that time had been laid waste by neoliberalism. The use of Briers I think makes the point that the people who felt they would preserve that world actually ended up voting for its destruction.

As you say, not the sort of thing the mass audience was going to respond to, as it undermined their own delusions. But/and a great series.

For what it's worth (in case a scheduler (or someone from the BSI!) happens to read), when we do eventually have a Richard Briers night, The Good Life was a really good show. Ever Decreasing Circles was a great show though, and here's hoping that gets due recognition too. Bung a Roobarb cartoon inbetween obviously.

Geordie Shore back last night - only stumbled across it on the EPG, until today I hadn't seen any promotion for it whatsoever. and I watch quite a bit of Comedy Central (sister channel) And that was just one article I saw on DS. Unusual as MTV usually plug it like crazy.

A question re: how ratings are calculated, and apologies if this has been asked and answered before.

As I understand it, there are around 5,000 households where a BARB box is installed, and it records which channels are selected, and how many people are in the room. The households are selected to reflect a wide range of demographics.

So, based on a sample of a few thousand, they extrapolate the number watching to declare that, say, 7.6 million people watched last night's Eastenders.

This is a similar methodology to that used by the likes of NOP when predicting the outcome of elections, which can be subject to quite a wide margin of error. What sort of margin of error do BARB claim for their ratings figures?

I can't remember now but if it was rating that well they probably wouldn't have just flung that last episode out in a post-10pm slot. I seem to recall Renwick saying the first episode also got the most complaints of any show on the Beeb for years and years, speficially for the scene where kids played football with a dead duck. Good job nobody was watching the last one when he was sent to prison for murder. Do you like how this show is sounding bleaker and bleaker?


I guess Briers knew and liked One Foot and expected something a bit like that but it turned out to be substantially different. I know Marshall and Renwick wanted the actor Richard Pearson, who was Victor's brother in One Foot, to play the lead role. The concept for If You See God had been knocking around for ages, though, I think they'd first tried to get it made about a decade earlier when they were still doing things like Whoops Apocalypse.

I dunno about Geoffrey Palmer being considered for One Foot because Renwick wrote it especially for Richard Wilson and was most upset when he turned it down, to the extent he kept sending him more scripts and almost begging him to do it.


I notice the front page of the Daily Express on Tuesday had the same picture of Susanna Reid they had on the front page about two weeks ago. Last time it was because she'd won some half-arsed internet poll with about three voters, this time it was because she wasn't on Breakfast because of the strike. I know the Express has the same stories every day but the same pictures is really taking the piss.

I presume no HD for BBC Two. The Fixer does really well. Good for ITV brilliant as always for BBC One on a Tuesday. Holly still should do better. At least EE didn't fall on yesterday.
