Gareth Thomas retired sick during the main show, and it was obvious that there wouldn't be a competitive skate-off.

The skate-off show was just an exhibition by the remaining contestants, who were all automatically put through to the final.

I think a "Mayday" call might just have gone out from Broadchurch CID and ITV HQ....

Wow, it tonked Selfridge didn't it!

It did though lose a million over the hour. But if c5m still want to watch ep2, then Broadchurch has a problem.

Super for the TG Xmas Special. It was a great bit of telly with some brilliant visuals.

I think ITV will be quite relaxed about the overnights for Broadchurch.

In their review Radio Times called it "superb" and "must not miss" and it should do well in the consolidated figures, as well as getting some awards for Tennant & Colman.

I didn't say the call wouldn't be answered by a Corrie lifeboat containing 10m coastguards, whilst the Beeb throws Mayday a Panorama-thick pair of armbands.

Although the numerous ads during Em and Corrie tonight for Broadchurch may just cause viewers to think "oh, that sounds a bit like the one on BBC last night, typical ITV. Must remember to watch Mayday at 9..."

I would expect Broadchurch to win the slot tonight, of course, but if Mayday retains c5m it's going to be dented.

Clearly ITV will have hoped Selfridge did a job on Mayday last night and kept it sub 5m. You are clearly putting a brave face on it - 6.2m is the last thing you will have wanted!

Wasn't that the excuse for 'the town' flopping. that it would get awards. No RTS or BPG nominations and only Bafta to go....

Lets call it the "Lets Dance around The Voice" effect. Launch high and then lose half the audience.

It will be close to 5M tonight, given the drop off across the hour, plus those who sat it out just cause it was Sunday night.

Huge audience again for CTM which is around what DOI was getting at its peak. And although DOI has become tired the BBC took on the DOI/WAH combo from the point of the first series of Larkrise to the extent that WAH is now gone and DOI is now tottering. Quite a turnaround as ITV have owned Sundays for large parts of the last twenty years. Selfridge is clearly not a rock if its going to be beaten by random one-offs like Mayday though I dare say it wil end up winning in the consolidated figures.

I still don't understand why such a BBC flagship drama serial isn't repeated during the week.
Luckily my PVR records the only showing of Casualty regardless of its varying start time.

Yes Eastenders is struggling ongoing. Generally cold humourless storylines and ITV taking every opportunity to poke it with its Emmerdale cattle-prod which might just shake a few viewers away each time.
Actually all soaps continue to lose audience and have done for years-where will it all end I wonder.

I've never known Casualty to have a set start time, i'd imagine its fans realise this aswell tbh

I thought i would post this,as i think its very interesting info and dispels the myths at how well the bbc does in the younger age group by some posters on this thread.Out of seven days the bbc and total channel 4 were tied at 3 wins each.Itv won 1 day.The bbc never lower then second.Channel 4 making up for a very poor overall total by still getting a very large young audience.Itv overall doing the worst of all the networks.

Casualty is also repeated in the middle of the night with signing if you're desperate.

Are you sure that you are not thinking of Holby City (which does have a signing repeat). I've never known Casualty to be repeated.

In its heydey it was. The Saturday schedule was set in stone with everything running at the same time from 5.15 till 10.30 every single week of the season.

Itv must be very disappointed with how the ratings turned out yesterday. MR Selfridge got its worst ratings as soon as it faced some good drama competition. And now due to the BBCs success with Mayday, Broadchurch will not launch with the audience potential it could have had if not up against a drama.

Mr Selfridges weakness also will give BBC hope to kill it off next year with some well publicised mainstream Sunday night period dramas up against it. All in all, the evening couldnt have gone much better for BBC as they exposed the weakening Itv schedule.

I would hardly describe Ripper Street as bad drama. It did beat Selfridge one week itself iirc, and was close on overnights for other weeks-but its just that its subject matter and style may not have been as palatable for some who may have gone with Selfridge.

Rippers not a bad drama. But its not what you normally find on a Sunday night, it did well for the kind of show it was. But if BBC showed a proper Sunday night period drama appealing to a mass audience without the gore, violence and sex, it could do some real damage to Selfridge, similar to what Mayday did to it yesterday.

On the other hand, it does rather expose the relative weakness of the (already renewed) Ripper Street, which lost out on the overnights several times to Mr Selfridge.

We shall see whether Mayday can maintain its performance all week - I suspect it will trounce Lightfields, but in the head to head tonight it may be difficult for either BBC1 or ITV to top 6 million.

Incidentally, it would be wholly illegitimate for the BBC to try to "kill off" any ITV programme, but I dare say you are right that they will be pleased that after a few defeats at 9pm on Sundays they have won again.

As opposed to the "ITV effect": launch low and stay there.
