Cloud Atlas without the adverts is 2 hours 52 minutes so add adverts on and that is 3 and a half hours.

Quite long considering it's one of those movies where you have to take in everything to understand it.

Has there been longer movies in the cinema ?

Each of the Lord of the Rings movies were longer - in fact, the third one was 3 hours 20.

Cloud Atlas is only 172 minutes according to IMDB. That doesn't seem particularly long. Return of the King is 201 minutes... Once Upon a Time in America is a bum-numbing 229 minutes.

That's not considering arthouse stuff like Satantango which is 450 minutes long

Of course there has. There's been quite a few.
Especially some of the epics from the 1960s.

Once Upon a Time in America (1983)
Doctor Zhivago (1965)

And famously Greed by Erich von Stroheim (1924)

Those are just three off the top of my head.

With or Without adverts.
Strange question. Without. How can a film-maker have any idea how long or how many adverts any one cinema is going to show before the movie itself is shown?

of course there has, you only need to google rather than make a pointless post about it. Also no one includes adverts when describing film run times.

Once Upon a Time in America is pretty much the longest film of all time. And it is always shown in the early hours, methinks networks are trolling people.

I see to recall Braveheart and Dances With Wolves coming in at 3 hours. Without the ads.

Our cinema messed up the advertisements during one of my viewings of The Dark Knight Rises (already a 2 hour 45 minute film) which led us being in the cinema for just under four hours.

what is this rubbish about adverts ?

They have zero to do with the running lengtt of a film - unless your local cinema is now showing them during the film ???

They affect how long you are sitting in the cinema and range from 5 minutes - 45 minutes.

but have no relevance to the length of the film - "oh we better cut this to 90 mins because the adverts beforehand will make it to long"

Logic and common sense tells you that what you quoted is most likely true.

I like the fact that one near the top is entitled "The Cure for Insomnia"

Anyway, while a longer than average film, there is nothing remarkable about the length of Cloud Atlas.

Somebody please tell me which cinema shows half an hour of adverts before the main feature begins, so that I can avoid it. In my experience, the adverts and trailers, put together, take fifteen to twenty minutes.

I've seen some films at cineworld and there have been 30 minutes of ads / trailers before the movie at times .

trouble is a coupla times there's only been 5 minutes of ads / trailers , so you never know .
