Nobody said it was determined by votes, it was always going to be based on sales, but most people, yourself included, believed Adele sold more records last year.

Last year Adele would have won. But they probably didn't feel the need to introduce the category because she would win some awards anyway.

Indeed, I'd say the lack of Adele was part of it too. When you look at the rest of the list, it's not exactly an exciting eclectic bunch, certainly very few real "stars" in there for the general audience. Had she been there to dominate then they'd probably have let 1D go away with nothing.

And the people putting shows like this together are very aware of the risks of making a show that fails to entertain the public and just becomes an industry back slapping event where "insiders" determine that the public aren't buying what they should be.

Not to mention that they're betting on 1D being big this time next year and if it seems like they're being snubbed by the event, they'll probably not bother showing up or performing.

The give away that they had won was Cowell being there. He doesn't care so much about awards themselves, he just loves to win and upset the "tutters" in the industry who get annoyed when groups like 1D win. If he didn't fully expect to have the chance to upset some people, he wouldn't have bothered.

Minnows when compared to the musical geniuses that are One Direction.

Adele was the only British act that dominated the world music charts 2 years ago, so there wouldn't have been any point of an award for global success last year. 2012 on the other hand saw 3 British acts dominate the world charts and I guess the award was in recognition of their achievements.

Never mind a made up award. Why do people take the Brits so seriously? Just an Industry outing for clever marketers isn't it?

Previous winners - where are they now?

Is there matching loo roll to those toiletry ornaments?

I can't say that I am surprised.

After all they are an example of a pop marketing success, even though their music isnt much cop. Clearly the marketing strategy of aiming them squarely at the bubblegum pop teen market has succeeded. Whether they will sustain it long term, I have my doubts.

I don't think it should also be forgotten that these awards are a 'popularity' award rather than anything else.

Exactly - they are the industry's way of patting themselves on the back, and generating interest so they can sell a few more of these artists records.

And there are so many of them these says they are becoming a bit meaningless IMO.

(no idea if she won this year, but I don't see the Brits pannel minding giving Rihanna a brit while they would more than drag their feet to do the same for 1D).

But I belong to those who really thought the global success was for Adele, to make up for cutting her speech last year.
It's funny how different the point of views about this award were.

And as always, thank you for your kind reply Elly.”

Rihanna didn't actually win Best International Female, Lana Del Rey did (which was probably the only win of the night I was happy about - I absolutely love Lana!) But I think the difference is, Rihanna was actually a contender for her award because despite her not writing her own music and releasing stuff that would be considered as pop, she is treated a lot more credibly as an artist for whatever reason. I would say it's because her music has a much more grown-up sound than 1D's.

And yes, it is quite funny that so many people thought Adele was a shoo-in for the award. I declared from the start (in another thread on here, can't remember which one) that the award was clearly going to go to 1D. Nice to be proven right for a change.

Also 1D have had 2 #1 and top-selling albums in the US.

However, I do agree that the Brit Awards are a joke especially with Emeli winning everything. However, I realized this back in 2008 when Leona was nominated for four awards yet received NONE! Despite the fact that she was topping the charts globally in that year both with Bleeding Love and her album Spirit. She was also the first British female to top the US charts in 20 years! Yet she lost the best female award to nobody Kate Nash, international breakthrough to now-nobody MIKA (and less successful at the time), to Take That's WORST single AND to that horrible punt at an album by the Artic Monkeys.

Such music snobbery! Could not believe it!”

At what part did I say that they didn't deserve to win Best Group? If you read my other posts on here you'll see that I actually did want 1D to win Best Group, mainly because I can't stand Mumford and Sons. I hated their little sneery "Oh, we never thought we'd win this being in the same category as 1D" followed by a snide little laugh afterwards when they gave their acceptance speech. Ugh. I just knew from the start when they were 'nominated' for Global Success that that was how they would keep the fans and SyCo happy, and not through recognising their musical achievement.

But this is my point - The Brit Awards aren't something to be taken seriously anymore. I'm going to go so far as to say that the Brit music scene is currently in a real mess, with a load of pretentious blokes with guitars, and Emeli Sande, dominating the charts and award ceremonies like this. I couldn't help thinking last night that if someone not from the UK was to watch the Brits, they'd be wondering what the hell is going on with British music. It all feels so slick, cynical and personality-free nowadays. There's no variety. Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift were absolutely phenomenal when they performed - that's what we need to be aiming for. I've made no secret of the fact that I don't 1D's music is good enough to justify their success, and it needs to be a lot better considering how much money they've got to invest in it. As soon as they get that right, I think people will give them a far easier time and they can be a group that a lot more people from Britain are proud of.

Are you serious? It was just a made up award to ensure they got something.

Utterly worthless, talentless group of individuals and their live performance was embarrassing

Next year they will make up a Brit award for the most arrogant and annoying pop star so that Oli Murs can finally win one.

Wasn't made up though when everyone assumed Adele was going to win it.

Suspect Adele didnt win it as she had a better place to be on Brit Awards night - not surprised after the way she was treated last year.

Adele might win an Oscar on Sunday, I don't think she gives a cr@p about a made up Brit award.

Goodluck to her, and I hope she wins, just hope we get a warning before she makes her speech.

as i said, i relish the thought that the Brits needed to bend over backwards to create a new Global Success category to award something to the boys.

however, it could just be a natural thing to do to keep up with the times.

the year before, when adele would naturally have romped off with it, it was foolish to create that award when we had just about ONLY ONE export that LORDED it over internationally, and only one POTENTIAL WINNER year after year!!

but in 2012, we had at least THREE ACTS who we can LEGITIMATELY say smashed it worldwide and were GLOBAL SUCCESS!!

it could very well be they have three contenders who are all deserving to get that title and the Brits Panel only finally, conclusively SEEN/DISCOVERED who it was AFTER tallying and balancing the 2012 worldwide sales.
