I guess the glaring error here is that they're not terrible. They're not exactly clogging up my Spotify playlists but they release "pop" music. Some of it is pretty good. A lot of people, like myself, who weren't 1D fans surely heard "What Makes You Beautiful" for the first time and instantly thought "smash". Why? Because it's a really, really good pop song. As a rock or indie song it's sh*t but that's not the aim.
It might be the case that some members of 1D also wouldn't listen to boyband pop in their spare time. But that doesn't mean they think what they release is "terrible". Plenty of music critics, who supposedly consider these things objectively, have been able to praise the songs.
I suspect Jake Bugg's problem is that anything that isn't what he likes = terrible.
(Actually that's rubbish, Jake Bugg's problem is that he can only think of one way to get his name out there).

Typically to form a group you need to 5 similar yet distinctive individuals, usually ticking different boxes. What's so important with 1D is the way that they're all individuals within the band. Twitter has been a huge part in that, allowing Niall to connect with his fans or Harry with his and so on.
Vocally, you need one lead singer, maybe another couple of decent ones and then the final two can get away with being fairly limited.
That lead singer was to be Liam. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that he would have been a solo male finalist. But Simon and his people had him earmarked to lead the manufactured group. And I'd not be at all surprised if they had other young male entrants in mind.
It's not as if they picked the finalists then thought "ah we'll just put what's left into a group."

No, he clearly isn't.

The wisdom of DS is that he and his label are clueless idiots. I tend to agree with you. But again, it's not like he has done this before. And he has signed at least a handful of boybands in his time, some like Westlife and Five have been very successful. Il Divo have been hugely successful although they're a very different kind of group. But he has never quite hit upon what he has with 1D.

I applaud the man, he is a genius, and I wish I could do the same.”
Absolutely, it's very clear that he saw huge potential early on with the boys.
