Safe to go for iPad Mini now?
Wanting to get an iPad Mini this week, but i'm wondering if there may be an update any time soon? I wouldn't want to get it only for a new version to come out in a couple of weeks.

I think the updates come out March/April... announced in March, launch April... possibly.
There will ALWAYS be an update within a year, though... |

Rumor is that the next one will have a far better screen. If you can, wait till the end of April.

yep ipad mini's screen is noticeably below the competition's. Worth holding off till they get a full-featured version.
Nexus 7 is also nearly due a new version. Not heard much about Kindle Fire updates. |

I can't imagine there will be an update within the next couple of weeks. Go and try the device out and if you like it, buy it. I'm sure you will not be disappointed.

I'm not so sure on this one, the rumors have been there since it came out that there would be a replacement in the spring. I'd wait a bit longer.

The mini is not a bad piece of kit. Its light, portable and just feels better to use compaired to the Galaxy Tab 2 or Playbook.
The Nexus 7, although has a better processor and slightly higher resolution (1280x800-216ppi iPad Mini 1024x768-163ppi) the mini feels better in the hand. Personally I would wait for the new product, yeah the retina display would be better and this will probably use the new a6 chipset. But the price will jump. £270 isnt a bad price to pay at the moment, but it will probably drop down to £200 to £250 realistically as an entry level product to fight against the other 7" models out there, with the new model in the £270 to £300 range so as not to dent the regular iPad sales. |

I'm sure people who want something cheap and cheerful to do a few minutes surfing or emailing will rave about it but for people who have used a proper tablet will find it lacking as you would expect from something in that price range |

The upgrades to products in the tech world are rarely groundbreaking, especially not from companies whose products with a sizable market share so the upgrades in the iPad mini 2 are unlikely to be enough to really justify anyone upgrading from the first so if you bought the first gen now if a new one is announced while you may think "having x, y or z would have been nice" you wont really miss them or for that matter maybe even miss the upgrades for the iPad mini3 Certainly thats been the case with me and my iPad2. While the iPad3 & iPad4 were both evolution's with additions that made them better it just hasn't been enough to justify upgrading despite having used both and liked the improvements they just havent been enough to justify upgrading. Now its 2 years old I will most likely upgrade when the iPad5 is announced |

Very true, I have the iPad 4th gen with the retina display and an iPad mini. To be honest, for general use and video playback, unless your running a 1080p movie you wouldnt notice, and to be honest you would use up to much storage for that.

Apple have only just this week caught up with demand for the Mini. The online store is shipping immediately or within a couple of days most places. March is only about a week away, if there was going to be a March update, I think they would have had to have gone into production by now which means lots of leaks usually, and usually even before that process begins - but there has been nothing so far. However we do seem to have started seeing a few iPad 5 leaks appearing.

That's my feeling too - can't see Apple updating the mini just yet when they've barely caught up with orders. I certainly hope that's the case anyway, because I just bought one a couple of weeks back!

They've updated iPads in March in the past, and rumours seem to be cranking up for the next iPad with a redesign akin to the mini. Cases have started appearing, which has been a good sign in the past.
Whether or not they'll update the mini at the same time, no-one can say. But if it was me, I'd wait to how the land lies come the end of March - the higher res screen would definitely be worth waiting a couple of months. If this was a couple of years ago, anything less than an annual update probably would have been unusual, but since the iPad 3 came out, they've updated more frequently. |

OK Correction, seems there are new Mini rumours appearing: http://www.cultofmac.com/217153/appl...isplays-rumor/
I can't imagine that retina screen being cheap to make - I think the current screen costs Apple $188, I think they might end up with 2 versions of the Mini, a £299 retina version with new CPU/graphics, and then maybe reduce the price of the current model to maybe £229. |

The iPad2 may still be manufactured - but only one model (16Gb Wifi) and at a discount. |

I just recently read that the AUO version of the screen is a VA type panel.
Just maybe this is actually the higher resolution screen to be on the Mini 2. Will it standardise at 16:10 like Android? I recall that in regard to monitors VA was classed as midrange. |
