iPlayer was installed, now it isn't

Windows Vista

I've used iPlayer for years, no problem.

Last night I wanted to download a program but was redirected to the 'install iPlayer' page. Just a blip, I thought.

Today same problem, after rebooting.

I uninstalled iPlayer and Adobe Air, and removed the files as described on iPlayer pages at BBC. Rebooted.

Went to installation page. It all hung when I clicked 'install'.

Tried again later and succeeded (well, it went through the agreements and status messages etc). Desktop shortcut back and unexpired programs there, too.

Tried to download a new prog but was back to square one again. Hanging on 'install'.

Any suggestions as to a further move??

Thanks.

Sid here,

Just an update.

I contacted BBC via email and was surprised to get an answer.

I repeated the process:
uninstall Adobe AIR
uninstall BBC iPlayer desktop
delete two folders mentioned in the instructions.
AND delete the existing programs and their folder.

I hadn't done the last one previously and so was greatly in hope.

Did a clean install.

Installed AIR and desktop and it went well.

Full of hope I went back to iPlayer home and tried to download a program.

Back to square one, asking me to install iPlayer desktop and hanging.

I'm having exactly the same problem - attempting to download no longer communicates with the iPlayer software - it just takes me to the web page about installing iPlayer.

I upgraded my flash player on Friday - I've got it set so it informs me when new versions are available but I have to install manually. I wonder if that's got something to do with it.

I'm surprised not many other people are having this problem - like you I've had it installed and running OK for ages....

I've probed this problem a bit further. I also updated Firefox a few days back to 19.0 - this appears to be the cause of the problem.
If I use Internet Explorer I can get iPlayer to download programmes. So my workaround in the meantime is to use Internet Explorer - may help anyone else having this problem.

EDIT: this appears to be similar to the problem that affected Google Chrome users - though I think Chrome v24.x is OK - I also tried an old version of that browser as a workaround.

I'm also having the same problem.

Are you using Firefox? Have you recently upgraded to 19.0? Have you tried using an alternative browser?

Interesting... yes, I normally use FF (ie exactly the same setup as the previous poster). It was not working on the version just prior to 19.0 (sorry, not sure which version that was), and still didn't work when it updated to 19.0. I don't use the iplayer that often, but it was OK about a week or 2 ago.

I've just tried it using Opera 12.14, and that has worked fine - so thanks for that suggestion.

I've just upgraded to Firefox 19.0.2 and the new version of Flash - and I still have the same problem. This can't be a widespread problem or we would have heard more about it from others. Strange! Still using Internet Explorer as a workaround for the time being - but only for iPlayer as I don't really trust Microsoft security...
