I don’t know enough about what’s normal in America, but when Ross and Rachel come back at the end of this episode, they talk about the ‘wedding’ gifts coming to $400 dollars, presumably each, I guess (and the dollar was maybe 60p then).

They look at the cheques and are always blown away by the amounts etc, but I think that $800 between them isn’t an overwhelming amount given the circumstances. I’m just going off hearsay because I’m British, but I have heard of Americans giving very expensive and generous gifts for weddings, and Jack and Judy seem to move in upper-middle class circles (Jack had the Porsche, they have a beach house etc).

My family certainly aren’t like that, but my sister still got cheques for £200 from family friends for the wedding and was very shocked! It always just jarred with me slightly that they were looking at the cheques with amazement when in the end it only came to a few hundred each.

(not judging the amounts at all by the way! whatever people are generous enough to give is always greatfully received by me!)
I think it was more the fact is was money for nothing, because they were only pretending they were married.

I know it was funny how much Jack and Judy favoured Ross, but Judy forgetting about Monica when she found out about Ross's "death" was too far fetched. As was Judy saying about Rachel that "she was like the daughter I never had"

When Ross and Mona meet, the size of Joey's feet becomes an issue. Wouldn't Ross know Joey has small feet?

Not nessecerily

I've never really thought about but just thinking in my head I couldn't tell you any of my Friends shoe Size and some of them I've known for 15+ years, I'd think it's quite reasonable to assume Ross has never had a reason to notice Joeys feet.

They hadn't grown up together like Ross and Chandler and had never lived together aside from that brief period he stayed with them whilst looking for a new place to live.

Joey was obviously self conscious of his feet size so presumably he had gone out of his way in previous instances to not draw attention to his feet in a major way

This is more a gripe about others gripes.

I have seen over the years, not just here but in other places, that many people slate Season 6 and largely mention Elle McPherson as a key reason.

Now I don't think Season 6 is great and I didn't think McPherson was particularly good or memorable (although I don't dislike her quite as much as some seem to).

However, I can't really buy into how the two opinions correlate.

McPherson only appeared in 5 episodes of the season, which has 25 episodes in total, so she can't really be that big a factor in how people perceive that season.

I would also argue that some of the episodes she is in are the better episodes of that season. Don't get me wrong, they were not the better episodes because of her, they were good in spite of her, mainly for other storylines such as the Thanksgiving episode where Ross admits to getting high/Rachel's meat trifle, there is the Apothecary Table episode which I love and also the Routine which is a classic for me.

Excluding the Janine episodes, the Season is just poor as a whole. They drag out the Ross/Rachel drunken wedding /annulment storyline for about 5 episodes when they could and should have wrapped it up in 2. At the same time s this is going on, we have some awful Joey stuff (Hernia, Porsche) and not a lot else.

The Unagi episode is good, but the 'one that could have been' double episode is tripe, mac and cheese and Joey's fridge are appalling and the season ends with the awful Ross/Elizabeth relationship and the Bruce Willis arc, one of which is the one with the Ring which could be the worst episode and stupidest outcome in the entire show.

The proposal episode wraps up the season on a nice note, although I'm still not convinced they should have dangled the slim possibility of Monica going back to Richard, just seemed a cheap excuse to bring Selleck back one last time.

Rant over......_

Agree with both points. I've never known any of my friends' shoe sizes and while yes I do dislike Janine, she was nowhere near as bad a character as Bruce Willis's character of Paul and those were the worst episodes of season 6 towards the end of the season. The Janine episodes have gems such as Phoebe running, Ross's teeth, Thanksgiving and the routine also going on in the episodes

As it's Christmas, maybe time to post a positive?
What's everybody's favourite episode and why?
I always, always loved the one with the bullies. Some great slapstick humour and 'Ooooh... oh no wait a minute, I have no-one.'

I liked the episode where all of them, apart from Phoebe, were taking part in a quiz to see who knew the most about each other and in the end the boys ended up winning the girls apartment.

Yes, TOW the Embryos is a fantastically written and performed episode. Probably my favourite, along with TOW the Videotape and TOW Everyone Finds Out.

That is my favourite episode, and also the dollhouse one 'dinosaurs don't go 'woof'

For me, it has to be the one where they all find out (about Chandler and Monica), especially the Chandler and Phoebe seduction scenes.

I find this is quite popular answer amongst Friends fans, so I would also like to give props to the episodes towards the end of Season 2, the ones including Eddie and the episode where Ross Geller and Richard (Tom Selleck) have an awkward conversation while Rachel and Monica fight over the last condom.

As already pointed out, TOW Everybody Finds Out is a great ep, as is TOW The Football. One of my favourites is also TOW Two Parties. I love the bits between Ross and Rachel's dad, like when Ross is wearing his glasses. And the bits where the guys are trying to get Rachel's dad between apartments without her mum seeing him, and they're dancing and cheering around him.

The second half of series 2 and various episodes scattered through series 3 and 4 are the pinnacle of the whole programme. Anything between series 1 and 4 is generally great.

Don't know what the hell happened after the London episodes but it felt like a different programme from series 5 onwards. Not for the better either.

"HAPPY NO YEAR" everyone !!!

Thank you to every single one of you who keep the discussion going ,
May we all gripe and praise and discuss all through 2017!!!

(My favourite episodes are the beach house and the one where they play football and the Julia Roberts/brooke shields ones- probably coz they were the first ones I ever saw )

Eddie is one of my fav characters, even though I watch it everyday I always seem to miss those episodes

Immediate episodes I love:

The one with the apothecary table
This is also a great episode

As I've mentioned before, I despise the Eddy episodes. The bloke clearly has some kind of mental illness, and his arc ends with a very confused man being thrown on to the streets of New York.

Anyway, on a more cheerful and interesting note:

There was less education on mental illness back then so it clearly wasn't mentioned regarding Eddie

Yes through more mature eyes and in today's context the way Eddie is turfed out is a bit unsettling but the friends are good at cutting off outsiders in their group once they become surplus to requirements.
Also I like to think of Eddie as an elaborate prankster who cons people all around the world while having fabulous adventures

My teenage son watches it on a loop and I've seen so many things in it I never saw before. The friendship group was a horrible clique really, it's no surprise that 2 couples ended up with each other (Ross/Rachel and Mondler) and Mike only married Pheobe in the final series because there's no way they would have coped with an "outsider" for the long term.

Other things that bother me is how nasty and hypocritical Pheobe was, she was particularly nasty to Chandler and always had her own agenda, used her upbringing to get her own way all the time etc.

Ross is just horrible. Possessive, controlling and really tight with money.

I'm taking this wayyy too seriously hahaha

Of course you aren't haha, But it is best not to do this with Friends because actually analysing Ross and Rachel's relationship is a dark thing to do, It's not funny in the slightest when you consider how it probably ends

I hadn't seen Friends since its first showing which I watched avidly. My teenage daughter was given the entire box set recently and we watched all the episodes together, her for the first time and me for the second time, through (much) older eyes. I was struck by how little it has dated, but also by how unlikeable most of the friends actually are! Only Joey seems to be a consistently nice guy - apart from his attitude to women of course! My daughter likes Chandler, Joey and Rachel but really dislikes Ross and Phoebe.

I watched the One with the Stoned Guy earlier, Chandler and Phoebe genuinely seem to be good friends. But in the later seasons Phoebe and Rachel are awful to Chandler

It's been discussed before but I don't think Steve would have remembered Rachel when they had a blind date in season 9 if he was always stoned
