Oooooh a live one!!
Chandler is talking to Ross and Joey about his fertility problems and how they don't want a surrogacy.
Joey says "so I don't have to learn what that means?"
But but but but his good friend Phoebe was a surrogate - with hilarious results...

Joey in the last series or two was just terrible, they made him far too stupid, as said in this thread already the one where he learns french is among the most cringe-worthy things I've ever watched

I know it's because he is playing a character and not himself, but I always found it quite amusing that, considering how much Chandler and Joey mention how much they love the movie Die Hard, they never realise that Bruce Willis dates Rachel for an episode
I came on to post this!

I thought that they could put in a reference in there or something. Anyway, it's nice to know someone else realised it.

It amazed me that Joey was even able to function once we got to the latter series'. He went from being slightly stupid but cute to just plain dumb. The show lost its way in the last few seasons.
True. If you'd only watched the first series, and then the last, you'd have to assume he suffered brain damage somewhere along the line!

I know it was incredibly stupid, but the episode with Joey trying to learn French makes me giggle every time. As part of my job I teach a second language to four and five year olds, and it very much reminded me of my frequent struggles to get them to repeat seemingly simple phrases correctly!

Didn't Chandler blurt out to Monica that he loved her twice?

First time during the The One With The Knife Through The Wicker Shoes Flashback and Monica puts a fake turkey on her head, then a fez then a giant pair of sunglasses and he says "you're so funny, I love you!"

Second time during The One Where He Flirts With Phoebe In The One Where They Don't Know We Know They Know where he can't kiss Phoebe "because I'm in love with Monica!".

I don't know if it's an inconsistency or not but I always recall that he blurted it out twice to her surprise.

He only kissed Mrs Altman. Carol was the first woman he slept with.

I think the biggest inconsistency is that Rachel and Chandler knew each other when they were younger, when in the first few series they supposedly didn't meet until much later.
However, you could argue that they saw each other so infrequently they forgot they had met before (despite kissing). Rachel especially could have forgotten about Chandler, like she did with Will, who she supposedly bullied for years.
I agree that this is the biggest inconsistency

Pilot episode - Monica introduces Rachel to everyone.
TOW Rachel finds out - Chandler references Ross falling in love with Carol at college (the assumption that Rachel, Ross, Carol, Chandler and Monica were at college together)
TOW The Flashback - Rachel comes to NY with her bridesmaids and she meets and fantasizes about making out with Chandler.
TOW The Thanksgiving Flashbacks - he meets Rachel (and her big nose) for the first time.

that last one also contradicts Chandler's surprise at Rachel's old nose in TWO The Prom Video

Granted I'm being a bit sad pointing this out, but it is the most glaring of the Friends continuity issues

I don't think Monica was surprised in the flirting with Phoebe episode, it just came as news to Joey, Phoebe and Rachel.

I always find that if I tune in and find Matthew Perry wearing glasses it's likely to be the season the roughly in the middle of the shows run and my least favorite because it was a very poor one.

Well why would you watch it? And if you didn't, why is it a problem that others did? Lame.

In one of the early episodes, Joey and Chandler offer to take Ross to hockey for his birthday, and the date in that episode is said to be October 20th! He says, "my birthday was 7 months ago," meaning his birthday was March, yet in the episode where Ross tries to punch Joey and breaks his thumb, they fill out his details, Ross says "you know my birthday!?" And Joey says "May-tem-ber???" And Ross says "OCTOBER 18"!
Phoebe was another character whose birthday changed. In season 3 episode the one with Frank Jnr - his birthday is 31st October halloween and Phoebe's is another date altogether (cannot remember which) - then see Season 9 - The one with Phoebes' birthday dinner - her birthday has been changed to 31st October instead.

Its a bit of a muddy one alright because Monica looks like she's never heard him say it before and I think there's an audience reaction too, but maybe she was just shocked that commitment-phobe chandler declared his love for her in front of his friends.

I can kinda excuse the Rachel/Chandler thing as I know I kissed one of my friends older brother at a nightclub, now he could walk past me and I'd not know him from Adam.

Rachel and Monica were friends in school but I don't think its ever mentioned if Monica went to college or not. It would explain how Rachel and Monica lost touch for so long too.
With whole Chandler/Rachel thing, I could kinda understand that Rachel was so self absorbed back then she wouldn't have registered Chandler and he wouldn't have really remembered her from a one off meeting (although with the amount of pining Ross did , surely he would be interested to meet THE Rachel Green) ... But then somewhere between Chandler meeting her and Monica chopping off his toe then he kissed Rachel at the college party...and remembered it for 10-15 years but didn't remember Rachel when he saw her again? Messy messy messy!

I always wondered why phoebe was part of the close group when she seems to be a bit of a bitch

she is very Conceited, frequently answering "i know" to compliments.

she insults the friends quite a bit.called monica high maintenence and rachel a walkover.

she mugged ross and tried to cut monica out of her life.

she is moody

she tried to ruin monicas restaraunt

she almost split up channdler and monica by stupidly telling chandler about richard on the plane.she puts her foot in it,breaking peoples confidences quite a bit

she lent money to monica and was asking for it back the next day.id be pissed at that.

she stabbed a cop

shes a vegan that eats meat, she hates big corporations but works for one.

chandler and joey got her jobs but she acted like a moron.

she throws many hissy fits and is ery inconsistant with her behaviour.

obviously, she has some great traits too,but she always kinda annoyed me.
Agreed!

Never liked her character, if I ever met someone like that in real life i'd dropkick them within 10 minutes.

I'm another one that agrees with you. Phoebe was often absolutely vile. Had she been my "friend", I would've told her to take a long walk off a short pier.

One time that particularly stuck with me was when Rachel was having a hard time with Ross getting married to Emily (I think this was the scenario) and when Rachel tried to talk to Phoebe about still having feelings for Ross in the coffee house, Phoebe said something like "Oh, that reminds me of the time I was living on the streets/in a burnt out car/whatever...although it doesn't really, because mines was a real problem and not some high school crap!", Rachel then got upset and started to cry and Phoebe said "Here come the waterworks!"

She was a very very selfish character, totally unlikeable in my view for the most part.

Monica is high maintanence and Rachel is a pushover

She's not a vegan. She is a veggie who ate meat when she was pregnant, which is understandable.

I never got the reaction from Monica over the whole mugging incident. She actually told her it was 'awful'. You know what else is awful? A child living on the streets of NY. I don't know what reaction Monica wanted from Pheebs, but she shouldn't have been made to feel bad for something she did to survive when she was a child. She didn't hurt anyone. She just scared the crap out of a young geeky Ross

Also, the cop stabbed her first

C'mon, this is a Sitcom we are talking about here not a drama best not to over analyze it .

It was still funny, thats what matters. They all became caricatures of themselves, Monica went from a a bit particular to neurotic, Phoebe went from zany to crazy and Joey from a bit dim to stupid.

If I remember right, this was an episode centred on Phoebe having irritability and bursts of anger and frustration because she'd reached her due date with the triplets.

I think they did a similar thing with Rachel when she was overdue with Emma where she was snapping at the others.

Either way, it's a sitcom and Phoebe's lines in that episode were hilarious. They're not 3D characters, they're just caricatures designed for their one liners.

One of the most memorable I remember from Phoebe was:

Rachel - A little girl just told me she loved me so I gave her everything.
Phoebe - No wonder you're pregnant.

Hilarious and true, Rachel was a bit of a tart.

The episode where Phoebe meets her real father really annoyed me, because from then on he was never referred to or seen again.
