Their crazy downstairs neighbour, Mr Heckles, is constantly banging on his ceiling (the girls' floor) indicating that they are making too much noise - and he also knocks on their door. When he dies in Season 2, they all go into his apartment to clear his stuff and hear just how loud it is when someone walks around upstairs on the fancy hardwood floors - so much so that Chandler bangs on the ceiling with the broom.

Unless the apartment remained empty (which is uber rare in New York), why didn't the new tenants complain? The girls didn't put down carpets and the noise was very, very loud in Mr Heckles apartment.

In the same vein, in TOW Chandler Can't Remember Which Sister, we hear that the girls' upstairs neighbour is incredibly loud when he speaks, walks and has sex. After that one episode, he's never mentioned or heard from again!

Picky, I know, but having loud upstairs neighbours myself, I actually felt for Mr Heckles so it's stuck in my head!!

Not really a gripe so much as an observation that the character of Kathy was poorly written or portrayed.

The fact she cheats on both Joey and Chandler within the space of a few episodes always makes her look bad when reviewing characters retrospectively, but she was generally portrayed as a 'nice' character. (let's not forget Joey was dating someone else while with her as well)

I guess they needed Chandler to split up with her so they could move onto the Monica/Chandler reveal at the end of that season, but it all seemed a bit sudden and rushed. Not sure if that was because Paget Brewster was only signed up for a short term arc, but I think they could have stretched it out a bit longer.

In one episode Phoebe calls Rachel "Pheebs" and thinks that's what they all call each other. That's ridiculous, surely Phoebe would have noticed that she is the only one called Pheebs because its similar to Phoebe

I adored Ross' character especially in the 2nd half of the series. But I do agree with you about him not being a great father. Like the scenarios you have mentioned, then there were times he even used Ben to get out of packing... however I reckon a lot of people do similar things... "Yeah, I can't go to that because, erm... I need to look after my son".

I was on holiday a couple of days back still and last week I randomly thought of this thread and said, "Ooh I need to write the Pheebs thing". Forget to though! It was ridiculous. She often responds to Pheebs before that episode.

The neighbour upstairs that Phoebe has sex with moved into the same apartment. I am guessing that soon after that episode, he moved out. And then we never heard about the complaints further into the series because they sorted out the problem. Or for all we know, after the loud neighbour left, no one wanted to live in there knowing that the previous tenant had died in there, but that's unlikely as you said, a New York apartment, which by the sounds of Monica, was fairly cheap (but that may be because her grandmother sorted that stuff out before).

Let's assume the 'Pheebs' thing holds up, she would have still responded to it as a name they all called each other.

The inconsistency would be the fact she never called either Monica or Rachel by that name before that Rachel Greep episode.

George answered the phone as the girls were too busy arguing and I'm guessing the ringing was annoying him.

They hardly ever lock their doors anyway. One of the times Monica actually locks her door I remember one of the others saying something like: "Oh now she locks the door but when her & Chandler are having sex on the sofa it's like 'come on in my bum is surprisingly hairy'!".


Also I'm pretty sure when Jack says to Joey which one are you this was when Chandler was either Monica's boyfriend or husband which makes it sound even more ridiculous. "Which one are you?" Well Jack it's obviously not the one who is your son or your son-in-law so that just leaves Joey.


Mr Heckles lived in the apartment below Monica & Rachel hence why they and the others always stamped their feet whenever Heckles hit his ceiling below them with the broom. The noisy neighbour who Phoebe sleeps with lived above Monica as they always looked up when they heard him. So that's two different apartments.

That line was in TOW the Cake, which was in season 10! When Joey's dad appears he asks Ross "how's the wife?" but in TOW the Flashback it is revealed that Joey and Ross don't meet until the night Ross and Carol split up making that line ludicrous!

Ben's last appearance was when Phoebe swore about the Pacman. Maybe Carol and Susan banned Ross from seeing Ben after that but even that wouldn't make sense and would be mentioned

Didn't they meet the night he discovered she was a lesbian? And as he himself said they had some great times after that. And of course Ben was conceived nearer the pilot than the flashback, As well as Ross mentioning in the pilot that Carol had just 'Moved her stuff out'

Yea the "which one are you" line grates on me for the same reasons - and even if Chandler wasn't with Monica there is no way Jack would confuse him with Joey. Chandler isn't just an old friend of Ross's he's the guy who lost a toe in his kitchen, he's the guy they held a grudge against for what, almost ten years? - For giving their beloved Ross weed!!

The line would've worked if it was one of Rachels parents.

The other thing is they did that joke so much better back in an earlier season with Gunter - "I thought you were Chandler... Well one of you is over there."

I suppose With Joeys dad.. Maybe the only thing he remembered about Ross was he had a wife at all. But yea they like to mess around the timelines at lot

I think you can forgive things like "which one are you" as the majority of all of the flashbacks and back history was decided as they wrote it and not years in advance

The 'which one are you' does seem a bit dumb considering the time it took place, 10 seasons in, I guess they felt the joke fell into the context that Joey had forgotten to get a present and was trying to pretend he had gone in with the Gellers on a joint gift, which was pretty ridiculous.

Another Ross gripe having earlier seen 'TOW the Chick and a Duck' was the scene where he blows off his Discovery Channel appearance to help get Rachel dressed. This whole plotline is supposed to be sweet and build up to them getting back together, but is tarnished by the creepy scene where Ross says he can always see Rachel naked by closing his eyes and remembering. It seems a little weird to me.

That and he counted each time they had sex.. Weirdo

I always found it weird that the girls out up with Joey hitting on them nearly all the time. I highly doubt that would happen in real life.

As the episode where Ross gets tanned is slightly uncomfortable; it just looks like he's 'blacked up'. Though, that's probably just because I've been influenced by the media as to what I can and can't laugh at.

Yeah "How you doin?" would not be sucsessful if it wasn't for Joey

I forget the episode, but it involves Chandler being fixed up with a work colleague that happens to be gay, because apparently Chandler has a 'quality'.

When the group are talking about this, Chandler asks the others if Ross has this 'quality'. Ross and the gang just laugh as if this is an incredulous notion.

Now my view is that throughout the series, Ross is by far the most camp and effeminate of the 3 males. I don't see why this was so prepostorous.

As for Ross as a parent, he wasn't given a chance to shine by Carol and Susan and Ross and Susan seemed to be competing with each other for most of season 1

I might have said this before, but when Ross and Chandler attended the college reunion I'm surprised that Carol wasn't there or mentioned and also surprised that the events of the Memorial Service episode aren't mentioned

Apologies for bumping this from a few pages back, but this is really noticeable in TOW the Nap Partners. It is an episode I have watched many times because I really love the actual nap partners (Ross and Joey) storyline and also quite enjoy the Phoebe/Rachel battle to become Monica's maid of honour.

The third portion of the episode, which is the Chandler/Monica part, is the weak link of the episode. This is where Monica bumps into a stranger that turns out to be an ex of Chandler's that he dumped for being fat.

Maybe it is just the nature of the storyline, but that drawn out, slow way of speaking, is very much on show here. Especially so with one line that stands out, 'seriously, good luck marrying me' when he makes an insensitive remark about weight.

I think I responded earlier in the thread that I just put it down to Chandler becoming less the funny guy and more the husband to be guy as time evolved, but as you say, it doesn't happen all the time.

I can't remember exactly who turned her in, I only saw this episode a few weeks ago as well.

Maybe it was actually down to Monica herself when she initially reported the matter to the police, prior to Real Monica actually meeting Fake Monica and growing to like her.

As for the other stuff, Carol may well have been there and just not mentioned or more likely she chose not to go due to not wanting to explain the 'becoming a lesbian' stuff, or maybe she actually thought she would spare Ross the embarrassment of having to explain.

The memorial stuff is probably explained by the fact that not many people turned up because nobody bar the odd few would have read it.

Regarding Chandler, I had a feeling that whoever was writing S7 just wanted him to be dull. Its the only inconsistent season with Chandler. Yes of course, he wasn't as funny when he was with Monica but he got better from the 8th season onwards. S7 was awful for him. I mean the Engagement picture episode?
