I hated how they tried to make out that her and Chandler were always meant to be. I don't believe in 1987 she wanted to impress Chandler so much that she was willing to make him a seperate meal of macaroni & cheese as he hated Thanksgiving Day and after she heard him call her fat that was her motivation to lose the weight. She surely would have lost the weight for health reasons or for her own motivation as she was fed up of being the lesser sibling in her parents eyes. The following year, after she lost the weight, she flaunted her body in front of him in a look what you could have had kind of way.
Another thing they did to try and make out her and Chandler were destined to be together was in the one that could have been where Monica was still fat, Rachel was still married to Barry, Chandler was writing stories for Archie's comics, Ross was still with Carol etc. Monica ended up losing her virginity to Chandler as Chandler pretended that Monica's partner had an emergency at the hospital in order to get him out of the picture. I don't believe Chandler and Monica would have ever got together like that.
Monica even says herself in a later episode that she didn't believe that her and Chandler were destined to be together they just happened to fall in love.
