Agreed. She does treat Monica horribly throughout the episode but that doesn't mean Monica has to go over the top with her actions and comments just to get some level of forgiveness she feels she needs.

The apology was enough. She didn't need to go any further.

I suppose the bit I find the most annoying is the end of the episode when after all the overboard stuff, she finally snaps and stands up for herself. If the episode had ended there that would have almost made up for Monica's weird behaviour, but after that she totally retracts and goes back to apologising and being weird again.

And as I say I do realise Mrs Green was being horrible to Monica but I imagine she must have been getting more annoyed at Monica throughout the episode (she couldn't even have a personal moment with Rachel without Monica interfering) but all the more reason for Monica to stand up to her.

A minor gripe for me is when Rachel (who is a week overdue at this point) says the reason why she's home early is because her work told her to take her maternity leave there and then.

She was a week overdue, why would she still be at work? Surely her maternity leave would have started weeks before her original due date.”

I don't know about 2002, but currently in America maternity leave is only for 12 weeks, and it's unpaid. So I would guess most mothers would prefer to work right up until they give birth to spend as much time bonding with their baby as possible.

The whole point of the Monica character is she 'needs to be liked' so no matter how Rachels mother treats her Monica needs her to like her again, In Monica's head it's her own fault and deserved because she forgot to invite her so she is being overly hard on herself

That's always been the case I agree. We see this as early as the second episode when Monica is doing her level best (with Ross's help) to get her parents to simply appreciate her more but just doesn't work. (Judy questioning Monica when Ross tells all about Carol, Susan and the pregnancy).

I think on this occasion though Monica's desire to be liked goes way too far. Fair enough you want to be on good terms with your best friend's mother but she goes about it in such an irritable way. But in her mind it probably feels right.

I will add I think is the worst appearance of Mrs Green in Friends. In the episode with Carol and Susan's wedding I do think she's quite nice and really adds to the episode but in this one it's like a whole different person. She had a right to be annoyed about the invite but she is really snide throughout.

I just dislike this episode in general.

It's a strange episode but I like "garage? I meant the gar-bage"
And her questioning Ross's self control

You're right "Maternity Leave" is part of FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act of 1993) Employers have to leave your job open for 12 weeks. If you are unable to return after that time they may sack you. The period if unpaid

Worse, it only applies to a company of more than 50 people (though some States reduce the # of employees) , so she may not had had any leave at all

I adore David Schwimmer's acting. Or should I say the way he "plays Ross", IMO he got funnier over time.

His stuff like, "okaaay" or when he was in the restaurant with Charlie and "Benjy", "it's just a funny image, you too in this restaurant, when ah-ah, hmmm".

Personal highlight was Ross vs Dr Green when Mona is present. Every scene was perfect. I've mentioned it before but POOR MONA! She had to put up with so much, why did she stick around for so long?

Ooh here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBukCCXntzY

But in the episode after Rachel has kissed Gavin and then calls in sick Phoebe comments that she has had '6 months of maternity leave, then kissed a co worker after a day and called in sick' (or summat like that). Now she got an extra months paid maternity leave becuase her boss wanted to buy her baby - so 5 months maternity leave? How strange.

Nice to see Ross and Chandler as the top two. IMO they are the best two in the group.

Poor Ross. No one ever appreciated his affection for Dinosaur toys.

Apart from the sales clerk in the baby store I suppose.

That would be possible, she didn't specify that it was Paid Maternity Leave and more enlightened companies do offer above and beyond what is the minimum stated by FMLA. She might work for a Canadian company that offers 15 Weeks Paid Maternity Leave and often offer the same terms to employees in US Branch Offices

Just noticed that New York State has passed a bill stating that as of 2018 Employees will be entitled to receive 50% paid leave, but initially only 8 weeks, rising to 10 then 12 in 2021. But the pay is capped to 2/3 of the State's Average Monthly Wage which means a max of $848 Per Month

I dislike the baby shower part of the episode.

But the other half is great, as the girls are at the baby shower, the 'B' story is the guys helping Joey audition for a new game show called Bamboozle, by playing the game.

It is utterly crazy, yet hilarious.

Smacks of jealousy of Joey and Chandlers friendship, and even if it wasn't was very unpleasant. Even at the end with paying the delivery guy to 'accidentally drop' the big white dog because she didn't like it. Wonder if Courtney Cox was less than thrilled when she first read the script. Yes, Monica could be unpleasant - they all could - but it was a real pity they did that to her for the finale.

Also interesting was how much they were obviously, and genuinely going to miss the show and each other. Jennifer Aniston and Lisa Kudrow in particular in the final scene did not appear to be acting.”

Monica's jealousy of Joey and Chandler's friendship was shown when she got upset about Rachel not being emotional enough about moving out

When it comes to Monica ripping apart the football table, I took it more as a joke about the role reversal of the men who are almost weepy over an object holding nostalgic memories - and it's the woman who just views it as a thing.

Plus, the scene played into the 'Monica is freakishly strong' thing that had been mentioned over the seasons. She didn't even need tools for most of it!

And we have seen her play that football table with the boys - even to the point where she had to be thrown out of the apartment for being so competitive.

New one!

In the one with the east German laundry detergent (S1E5) Monica is in the restaurant with Joey and the other couple, she's talking about the underdog balloon floating away from Broadway.

That didn't happen until S1E9 conveniently named "the one where underdog gets away".

Gonna guess they changed the order of episodes. Or Monica has a psychic ability which was never revisited

Yep, that's what I thought, I didn't see anything more to it than that.

Monica had "tools" - the one with the messy secret cupboard - so there was a reference to her enjoying manual labour.

Monica being the best worst massager ever, a reference to her strength.

Yea it was a low point
A lot of "Monica/Chandler little relationship niggles" are annoying episodes
"beautiful guest room!"
"sense the tone!"
"joke joke joke" - "bleh bleh bebleh"

It's weird coz for the most part I love Monica and Chandler together but when they're both at the worst could they BE anymore annoying!!!

Agreed, the other one I found whilst watching the one where they meet pheobe's friends that have adopted. Chandler says "we've gotta get out of here baby"! the way he says baby is so cringey

Just watching the Pilot for the first time in ages. Why does Rachel know where Monica lives? I guess Rachel knew to find Monica at Central Perk from the Flashback episode, but Monica never mentioned that

The slow pace of the episode reminds me of early Seinfeld as a "show about nothing". Phoebe's first line of "Does he eat chalk?" Is a gem
