I was writing pretty much the same thing on the originals thread so thought I'd write here instead!

I used to be firmly a Twilight is better than Vampire Diaries girl until I was introduced to it a couple of years back by a friend. And loved the first series! The stories were good, the love triangle was fresh (and not dragging into 80 episodes of it!) and the characters were mostly human and relatable! I loved Anna, Vicky, Caroline and Elena!

Fast forward (and I was about six episodes into Series 4 before I stopped) and it's just got to such boring writing. With a new character in every week, the introduction of the Originals, it's turned Mystic Falls practically inhumane. Everyone is either a vampire, werewolf, hybrid, original, vampire hunter or witch. I'm sure the only recurring cast member who isn't anything is Matt! It seems a circle of someone dying, brought back to life, dying again, someone wants a potion, and start again. The love triangle is just ridiculous, I don't even want Elena to be with Damon as it seems so forced now and like she is meant to be with Stefan. The only person I've liked is Rebekah and that's because she's acted more human than most and seems to have the feelings side switched on, everyone else I've found boring.

I miss the old days where it built up to one big episode in the finale and Katherine trying to break up Stefan and Elena. So yeah, I've stopped watching for now!

No so much bored of it as I am kinda down. I absolutely agree with you about the inhumanity of the cast. Poor old Matt's the only one really left standing and I think the show suffers for that.

Veeeery sick of it all being about Elena. Also tired of the Originals so I'm hoping their spinoff gets a green light so they can all bugger off.

I absolutely love Elena! But she would be even better if she would get a life besides chasing Salvatores. If she isn't with them she's talking to Bonnie/Caroline about them and she needs to be away from them and be her own person, also they need to stay away from her.

I do agree about the spinoff too, if they go I think the show could get back to being just a few central people in it. I think for me the best storyline of the whole history of the show was in relation to the tomb in the first series. It all led up to that and then the season finale was great. We don't get that now, just end of series three was Elena died and everyone knew she'd end up a vampire. Too predictable and lazy writing!

I have no problem with Elena but every single plotline connecting to Klaus has done more harm than good for the show in my opinion.

Buffy and True Blood worked better as shows (Being Human UK as well to a degree) because each season/series had a different and varied Big Bad, which is something The Vampire Diaries really should've done from the start.

I used to love this show but now find myself switching off during episodes, not the TV but my mind and then I get to the end and realise I have just been day dreaming the whole time. It lacks something, most likely the human aspect as pretty much everyone now is a supernatural. I find Bonnie and the fact she has a spell for everything incredibly boring seeing as she is a relatively new witch but is now an expert. I love Damon and Elena together but I'm not sure what direction the series can head towards now? I have just got into the new Beauty and the Beast on Watch and this is beating Vampires Diaries hands down for me right now.

it has gone for me, from being my absolute must watch of the week, always needing to watch the preview of the next episode and read every last bit of teaser spoiler information to the point where I am considering giving up on it altogether!

When Klaus first came into it I thought he was a great character but they've milked him for all he's worth where I start to think the producers probably consider him more important than the core cast. The main thing I really enjoyed about TVD was it's structure, how each episode ties together to make a strong narrative throughout the seasons but I think by having this ongoing same villainry it's starting to damage the show. I read an opinion in SFX magazine I think it was that mirrors my own - that getting Klaus and the Original s out of TVD and into their own spin off is the absolute best thing that could happen to TVD. It's become very stale and tired with Klaus popping up everywhere as this indestructible super-villain. It's too much of a good thing and things need freshening up.

It certainly has become boring to me, I found myself not caring about this damn 'cure', the hunter tattoo and this is really disappointing because like I said at one point it became my no.1 of all the stuff I watched. Each ending had that ' I can't wait to see what happens next!' feel, now I barely notice it's ended at all. The Originals spinning off into their own show is absolutely the best thing that can happen and might just save the show for me.

I've stopped watching season 4 because I just couldn't watch it anymore it was boring me & I'd find myself flicking through the show more than watching it which is sad because it used to be my favourite show & I loved watching it every week it always had an amazing twist or turn

I've also been watching Beauty & the Beast & even though its not the best show I'm enjoying it so much more than I was TVD!!

I remember the episode where it was the Mystic Falls pageant and Stefan was away killing something so Damon stepped in and did the whole dance to 'All I Need' and that was my favourite moment of television in years! I used to look forward to the next episode and the will they won't they but they have completely exhausted it now. I think Elena becoming a vampire was more to do with Damon than actually exploring the side of her that previously didn't exist.

Can't wait for hopefully all the Originals to leave. Alaric leaving was one of the worst decisions ever! At least Damon had a friend then.

I think part of the problem with TVD is its producer has a very set idea of where the show is headed, and has had since season 1. The problem with that in any show is that you cannot account for how popular actors and the dynamics etc are going to be, a good show is a flexible one that can work with its strengths, that's where this show has gone wrong because to me, its not doing that at all.

I loved season 1 and 2, it was full of shocks and was addictive viewing. Now it just too samey, boring storylines being repeated week after week. I still watch it, but find I'm distracted by other things and barely give it any attention. Such a shame

Agree with a few others. I absolutely adored the first couple of series and was completely addicted to it, but it seems to have been going gradually downhill since then.

There's only so long one love triangle can remain interesting and I'm beyond having any interest in it. It's just a bit too central for me and I've found myself zoning out of the episodes completely recently. Infact, I think I've probably missed a few episodes on the trot now for the first time ever.

Apparently Klaus should have been killed off at the end of Season 2 (the best Season imo), but because they liked Joseph Morgan so much, they kept his character on. I think the show's downfall came as a result of this and they lost their winning formula as they started to hold him in higher regard than their core characters.

Klaus and Elijah were supposed to be highly enigmatic untouchable Originals, but Klaus has always lacked this for me. Elijah and Mikael were always much better villains for me, with both of them inspiring genuine terror in me at times. Elijah has always come across as a more well-rounded character, despite the fact we've seen far less of him than Klaus. Although strangely, with the dreadful handling of the main triangle, which I no longer care about, Klaus has suddenly become more appealing for me, which for me shows how bad things have got! I think it's because Elena's whingeing, self-pity and supposed self-sacrifice seems to have reached new proportions this season. I'm starting to regret her being turned into a vampire, as her humanity was a very strong part of the show.

Elijah remains an enigma and I think this is why he is my favourite character and why I support his occasional appearances rather than a series regular. I would hate to suffer overload of him, as he works best in short, sharp bursts.

The shock factor of killing of characters seem to have run its course too. I'm watching at US pace, so not sure what's aired in the UK, but I found
Spoiler

I think the loss of Alaric has hit the show harder than I thought it would, and it all now seems that many of the characters couldn't care less about each other. I used to like the Elena-Caroline-Bonnie friendship dynamic but that's also gone.

I was so excited for this season, but now, 15 episodes in, it's failing to deliver for me.

Gotta agree with you, Jayma.

Klaus was scary in theory (when he possessed Alaric- who can really act scary) but in practise he's just this massive bratty man-child and I've never warmed to him at all.

They should have killed him off a long time ago.

LOL at BIB - and the same goes for Rebekah - the bratty woman-child! I sometimes wonder how they're related to Mikael and Elijah!

So you can see why it's worrying now I'm finding Klaus's scenes more palatable than anything with Elena in it! I know she has a lot to be miserable about, but this season, she's gone a bit beyond for me.

I wish they'd done whatever it had taken to keep Matt Davis/Alaric, as his dynamic is sorely missing.

this whole season sucks for me right now. Klaus should never have been made a regular character. he has nothing to do. after such a dramatic entrance for his character everything he has done has been a let down for me. he should have left town like Elijah did. he is boring now. Rebecca needs to move on from her perpetual teen phase and leave town also. be woman enough to move on. even Katherine moved on and just comes back to town once in awhile. I liked Jeremy and I will miss him. making elena a vampire has done nothing for the series in my opinion. the only thing I like about the show now is the Klaus and caroline banter but I guess that will all end when he goes to his new series. and Bonnie, I do not know where to begin.

Why oh why do they overuse characters? I've never liked Klaus and the whole Originals just bores the pants off me yet here they are in every episode.

I've only seen a little bit of Series 4 but what happened to Elena at the end of Series 3 needs to be wrapped up pretty sharpish in the hopes the show can regain some semblance of what it has lost...

Or they could just cancel it while it's still got some dignity left (but that'll never happen).

No such luck it's already been picked up for a fifth season but there is the hope that if the Originals pilot gets picked up then the show could improve again with loss of Klaus etc!!

When did TVD stat again on ITV2? It seemed like the longest time between episodes. I think the last one I saw was when Elena nearly attacked Jeremy, and the professor guy was starting to get his claws into Bonnie. Have I missed a lot?

I haven't given up on it completely but, I agree, it isn't what it was.

In particular, I get very ambivalent over the way the people we are supposed to like are actually serial killers. Even Caroline is a murderer!

I know it's supposed to be excused by their vampire nature, blah, blah, blah, but there have been plenty of times when it has actually been a choice. In any reasonable society they'd pretty much all be in jail for life by this point! It's like we're all forgiving them just so that the show can continue

It started last Tuesday with 4x10. 4x11 is on at 9pm tonight but I'll catch the repeat later.

I'm so sick of Klaus! He's always hanging around like a bad smell and I just wish he'd die already! I've never been impressed with Klaus and I can't for the life of me understand why he's given so much screentime or why he was upgraded to a regular in the first place. A one season villain if ever I saw one. Not even one season. They could've wrapped his story up in half a season but apparently he needs a spin off now. At least he'll finally be gone!

The quality is on the floor. There are no surprise twists, no interesting story arcs and all the characters have become stale, boring and annoying. The rot set in with the arrival of The Originals but frankly I'm over the love triangle between Stefan/Elena/Damon too. I hope things pick up when Klaus leaves.
