And here's why.

Cats are clean. Dogs are absolutely filthy, they filthy your house and the hair they leave everywhere is much more troublesome than that of cats. Dogs require cleaning/bathing, while cats clean themselves. Cats also carry fewer diseases that are harmful to humans.

Cats have the courtesy to bury their shit. You will rarely see a cat shitting on the pavement, they naturally look to go in sand or soil. Dogs will go wherever they feel like it, and it's absolutely disgusting.

Cats are less emotionally insecure. Dogs require constant attention and will show their shallow affection at all times, whereas cats make you work for theirs. And when you receive it, it is worth more than a dog's because of this reason.

Cats are more cuddly.

Cats are more natural. What I mean that this is that the domestic cat still retains most of the features of the wildcat. Dogs are so far away from wolves that they feel too manufactured. And they are more prone to disease because of this.

Dogs are more dangerous. When was the last time you heard of a cat killing a small child?

Cats are less noisy and less obnoxious.

Cats are free roaming animals and will always (baring an accident) return to a loving home. If your dog gets out of the garden, there's a good chance he won't come back.

Cats are intellectually superior.

Please not again we have had numerous rows and bickering about this time after time on this forum. Cats are great in some situations and dogs in others is the best way to look at the question.

It's not a competition. I absolutely love dogs, I would consider myself a dog person but a cat suits my current needs more because I lie alone. In fact I think cats are much better pets for single people and older people but dogs are a much better pet for families.

The world is big enough for both dogs and cats.

Both have their pros and cons, IMO.
If owned responsibility, there's not much in it I don't think.

For my circumstances, dogs are currently more suited

Cats are great. You can catch them and feed them to your dog. You definitely can't feed a dog to your cat. The cat does make an awful racket though as it is torn apart though.

cats are cats, dogs are dogs. both have good and bad points. both are for different people.

personally i find cats irritating. and far more demanding of attention than dogs
what's more, cat hair is a heck of a lot harder to remove from clothes than dog hair and my dog doesn't walk around on my food preparation surfaces, as a lot of cats do.

but then this is just the animals i know personally.

as i always thought it was the other way around, especially with the whole faecal matter on paws thing
then cat scratches becoming infected, toxoplasmosis etc.

cats have killed children though, more of an old wives tale these days, but it has been said they sleep on the faces of young children in cots/prams and smother them.

one of next doors cats once got a boot up it's hacienda for pawing around in the pram while my sister was sleeping in it as a child (back in the days where you could leave your tots parked outside your front door for a sleep in the fresh air...

Cats also kill MILLIONS of birds every single year. Even species that are on the endangered list. At least you can actually see dog dirt, but cats bury theirs, so you you are not aware of it until you have it all over your hands while gardening. Dogs are the subject of constant persecution, but cat owners are never held accountable when their pets are killing wildlife and depositing their waste in other peoples gardens.

There is a black and white cat that has been in my back garden a few times. The first time I became aware of it was when it scared the living daylights out of me when it made a noise in the garden. This was not long after somebody had tried to break into the house via the back garden. The next time was when it tried to kill a bird which also startled me. I went out to see if it had been successful, but the bird was running about on the ground, unable to fly. I put in a box and put it in the shed (with the intent of taking it to a vet the following day). Checked on it the next morning and the box was empty. Can only guess it had managed to escape as there were no signs of it anywhere else in the garden. The last time was when it scared me again by appearing suddenly out the back late at night. By this time, I had my dog, so I let him out to chase it away. Well, I have never seen a cat scramble up a fence faster in my life. I wouldn't normally have let him chase a cat, but this particular cat was really getting on my nerves. That was a few months ago and I haven't been aware of it since.

I also have a friend who has a number of cats. Whenever you go into her house, the smell from the litter trays hits you immediately. She got a lovely new sofa and it was covered in hairs within a day. They are allowed onto everything. The counters, tables, and all the chairs. They also pile on top of your lap as soon as you sit down. When you leave, your clothes are covered in hair.

Do I hate cats? No, but I am fed-up of them being allowed to roam wherever they please, and of their owners never bothering to try and clean before they have guests. My dog (a Lurcher) doesn't shed that much, but I do vacuum before friends arrive. I also wouldn't allow him up onto the worktops or tables. He gets up onto the chairs, but they also get vacuumed. He isn't allowed to sit on your lap either (then again, he knows he is too big to be a lap dog anyway).

I'm sitting here, with a sleeping cat either side of me, having a right good chuckle at the amount of seethe from the dog lovers on here, coming out with some of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard about cats.

not sure why my comment about children is quoted here, it was hardly "seethe" just stating that it has been said as "apparently" happening.

though just to agree with another poster, the first time my Ex went to speak to his housemate about moving in, the housemates cat came up to me while sat on the sofa.
so, as you do, i put my hand down to see if he was interested in it, he nudged it and rubbed his back along it as well. i stroked him, which he seemed to enjoy, though about 30 seconds later, despite giving off no visible warning signs at all, he turned round, clawed and bit my arm and wandered off. just to come back a few minutes later and ask to be stroked again.
again my friend was clawed around the face by her own cat who didn't give any warning so it's not just "dog lover seethe"

Well I have a sleeping dog on one side and a sleeping cat on the other.

I do love both of them but they are completely different animals, doesnt mean one is "better" than the other, just that they are different.

Oh and my cat does bite you without warning, he can be sitting there all lovey dovey while you stroke him, and without warning go in for a full scale attack.......bunny kicks bites, the lot, then can be just as lovely dovey five minutes later.....

He has killed many birds and little furry animals.

And his hair is much harder to get off my wooley jumper than the dogs.

My dog however is the most gentle loving and slightly gormless chocolate lab and all she wants is you to love her!

They both have their own characters which is why I love them equally.

I agree with most of your post. You just cannot compare cats to dogs. Dogs are superior in every way. They worship their owners, cats love anyone who will feed them. Dogs are protective of their owners, cats would just run away at any signs of danger.

I could go on and on about the wonderful virtues of dogs. Our labrador is now over 14 years old and has been pure joy.

Oh and he doesn't poo all over everyone else's garden and allowed to roam the streets.

Dogs are just awesome.
