Torvill and Dean insist Dancing On Ice will not be cancelled

Good news for Dancing on ice fans:
Quote:
“Skating legends Torvill and Dean have promised Dancing On Ice fans that this is not the last series of the ITV show.

It had been reported that channel bosses were considering axing the format, after artings fell again this year despite their recent shakeup.

This year producers sacked Louie Spence and brought back Jason Gardiner. They also asked Karen Barber to return to the judging panel, to create some tension between her and the man she hasn’t spoken to in two years. They paid a fortune for US actress Pamela Anderson, only to have her voted off in the first week. All this and the viewing figures still fell.

Last weekend, after Keith Chegwin was eliminated and all the remaining contestants took part in a team challenge it was confirmed that Sunday’s live show attracted the lowest viewing figures in the series’ history.

However, in an interview with The Daily Star Christopher Dean said that he and Jayne Torvill are planning to be back for the next two years at least.

He said: “We are very hopeful we will be back for the ninth series next year and then the tenth the year after that.

“We still have a really good core audience which we’ve had from the beginning.”

Chris recently hinted that ITV were in talks with them about a special series, since next year will be the 30 year anniversary of his and Jayne’s big win at the winter Olympics with The Bolero.

Speaking this weekend he added:

“So as long as ITV want us we will continue. We were part of the *creation of Dancing On Ice right from the beginning, so we are very invested in the show.

“We want it to be as good as it can be and I think this year is the best yet.”

Dean did concede that ratings for the ITV show have fallen, but he thinks it’s a common problem facing most TV shows right now and blames the frequent ad breaks for much of the decline.

He continued:

“Ratings are down across the board. There are so many channels and so much choice nowadays. For a show like ours, which is on for an hour-and-a-half, we are up against people who record it so they can fast-forward all the ad breaks.”

In the meantime the pair are hoping they can keep it interesting for those tuning in this weekend. They have something big planned for tonight’s show and tweeted last night saying:

“We have a very edgy number for the pros tomorrow. I hope you al like it. Very different for DOI. 😊””

Glad they have spoken Hope they can work with others to improve the show and its ratings.

I think they have hit the nail on the head.

I do believe a lot of people have turned off but like he said. I record it an start watching half hour later so i can fast forward through the ads.
Not because i'm watching anything else. Just because i would rather be doing anything else than siting through ads.

For me the problem is the all of the ads - there was no problem with the judging panel - it was fine. There was no need to bring back Karen, Jason and introduce Ashley

I personally think that viewers can see anyform of manipulation - the format was fair in the first series with the required element etc

The team challenge backfired last week - as we lost Keith rather than Samia who should be out of the competition now

It is manipulation that annoys fans the most in my opinion

I dont think the challenge last week backfired. It worked perfectly and two of the worst skaters ended up in the bottom two.
It would have backfired if Beth being one of the strongest had ended up in the bottom two.

But i agree, the manipulation is frustrating. I feel the same with X factor

How did the team challenge backfire? The judges had already put Keith below Samia so it didn't matter whether they won or lost the team challenge, he would've been lower than her anyway

The whole show has become predicable and boring

They might be lucky for one more series

Personally I think it's time to put this dated show to rest

I can't stand the ads, far too many of them. I record it then whizz through. Can't stand some of the chat either especially Christine Bleakley - she is totally superfluous to me.

The show just feels dated. We see the same lifts series after series and week after week. There are far too many adverts, most of the twists are pointless e.g. team challenge and duels. This series there also seems to be some manipulation such as Matt being saved despite tripping yet Pamela was voted out and also Samia being saved after hardly skating. They should take a year off and return in 2 years or just end the show soon. It's getting very stale now.

We see the same lifts but Tony Gubba makes up new names for them to try and fool us!

Rather be solution than problem focused myself.

Let's have

A No Lifts Week

A Proper Pair Skate week, no headbangers but synchronised spins and jumps and a thrown jump

A Proper Ice Dance week, face to face skating, lots of steps, low lifts and assisted jumps

Chris thinks this is the best series yet? Is he mad?

I think more people would watch again if it was more like the earlier series, where the concentration was on skating skills and steps on the ice.

Oh dear just like they say on SCD every year even though it's not so!

I don't think it's a good idea to have Karen as a judge with her being coach - as has been said many times elsewhere. If they want her as judge someone else should coach. I'd rather have Louie than Jason but that's a personal thing so getting rid of Jason wouldn't necessarily help the ratings. The whole show needs an overhaul - different judges, some new pros with a bit more character, (bring back some of the old ones) same for celebs (more character not bringing back old ones) someone to help Jane and Chris with inspiring choreography, cut down on ads somehow maybe have them on for longer at times but with less actual breaks as I know they have to have them.

I prefer Jason to the irritating Louie so hope they keep him

Glad to hear Chris saying DOI will continue.

They really need some 'star celebs' next year so who do you suggest?

I heard Dougie Poynter from McFly saying he wouldn't mind
having a go at DOI and perhaps Danny Jones would be a
great contestant too. In fact why not have the other two
band members Tom Fletcher and Harry Judd at the same
time. Now that would ensure a big audiience!!

Anybody else got suggestions?

Where was that article quoted from? There is no reference. If it was a newspaper, they need to employ a better proof reader - there was a spelling error right at the beginning: artings instead of ratings.

It's definitely true about the ad breaks though. They drive me insane. Last night it came on with the pro skate, and the judges were introduced with a clip about props and then it cut to a break after about 8 minutes

Perhaps after all these years they have just run out of interesting celebs. The last one I was interested in (and posted on YT) was Hayley. By contrast, last autumn I followed Denise Van Outen with great enthusiasm and posted all her dances on YT. I would like to see her have a go at DOI but no-one seems to have done both shows - perhaps there is some kind of contractual ban.

The only sugestion I have for next year would be Tamzin Outhwaite. She seems attractive, interesting and capable.

I don't know where Chris gets the idea that this is the best series yet - most people I know who watch it think it is the worst by a long country mile!

The long and frequent ads are a huge downfall; I usually hate to generalise but think it's safe in this instance to say everyone hates them. We usually start watching the show sometime between 6.45-7.00, so we can ff the ads, and most times we catch up by the end of the show, which gives some clue how much time is spent on the ads. The results show too is a waste of time just repeating who's done what in the main show. Why not a really good - preferably guest - professional skater routine?

The other thing Chris said that was a bit laughable "we have a edgy number for the pros......." Edgy? It was beyond tame; there was nothing in it that the celebs probably couldn't have coped with.

While on a rant (apologies one and all) I wish they would do something about the lighting. No doubt it looks great for the studio audience, but at times it is so OTT with colours & effects it is hard to see what the skaters are doing (pity anyone inclined towards epilepsy).

Rant over. Getting off my soapbox now..............

I think it should be rested for a couple of years. When Saturday Night Takeaway was falling in the ratings, it was rested for a few years and came back this weekend on a high. A programme can only go so far, very few run over a long number of years without eventually wearing itself out. The public get bored with the same reality shows being thrashed out every year.. the X factor, Strictly Come Dancing, Lets Dance etc and also now the Voice....similar formats, all reality TV shows. They have now become boring and I think that they will all dwindle, including Strictly which only had a good year last year due to the Olympic stars it pulled in.
